Pedestrian-friendly features that may be implemented include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Roads with reduced speed limits<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">More barrier-free pedestrian crossings with pedestrian priority<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Road markings and treatments to calm vehicular traffic and encourage gracious road behaviour<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Wider and more accessible footpaths where possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\">To further protect pedestrians, traffic offences that endanger others within Friendly Streets will incur<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two additional demerit points on top of the prevailing demerit points for the offence.<\/li>\n<li>Composition fines will be raised by $100.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These enhanced penalties match that of offences committed at Silver Zones and School Zones. This change will take effect from 1 January 2026 to provide time for motorists to adjust<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>10 New Locations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pilot projects completed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Friendly Streets\u2019 was first announced in 2023, with five towns \u2014 Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Batok West, Tampines, Toa Payoh, and West Coast \u2014 designated as pilot projects. There were completed in March 2025. \u201cWe have received positive feedback from residents,\u201d reported Dr Khor. \u201cFor example, residents living at Ang Mo Kio Street 31 have shared with us that the Friendly Streets features, like the new raised zebra crossing, make their commutes much safer. They also appreciate the improved barrier-free connectivity.\u201d According to LTA, \u201cResponse from residents have been positive, with nine in ten agreeing that their walking and cycling experiences have improved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Khor emphasised that the rate of progress was only possible by partnering community representatives. \u201cWe walked the ground at each site to observe the behaviour of commuters using each street, and identified areas of improvements specific to the user behaviour in the area,\u201d she shared. Besides appointing a taskforce \u2014 comprising the Adviser and community representatives, such as the Merchants Associations, the residents network, or school representatives \u2014 to engage the community, local residents were also surveyed to hear first-hand their commuting experience and needs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dr Khor revealed that the \u2018Friendly Streets\u2019 initiative will be expanded to all towns in Singapore by 2030. They will be located at high-activity areas near key amenities. \u201cThis will serve all residents in the neighbourhood, including private residential estates,\u201d said Dr Khor. \u201cFor example, among the 10 upcoming Friendly Streets, Pek Kio and Havelock are also located near private residential areas, and their new features can be enjoyed by all pedestrians and cyclists visiting nearby amenities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, 15 more locations have been identified and engagement will commence in 2025. These locations &#8211; Boon Lay, Bukit Timah, Fengshan, Geylang, Jurong West, Opera Estate, Pasir Ris, Queenstown, Simei, Tanjong Pagar, Telok Blangah, Thomson, Woodlands, Yew Tee and Yishun &#8211; have a higher proportion of seniors or young families who will directly benefit from the initiative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now that the five pilot locations have been completed , 10 more have been announced in 2025 and expected to be ready by 2026.
