Singapore Road Safety Month 2026 emphasised that road safety is a shared responsibility. As a stalwart co-organiser of this annual event, AA Singapore supported this message by sharing crash prevention tips and ways to mitigate road-related incidents.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"\"As the saying goes, \u201cChange begins with us.\u201d Singapore Road Safety Month (SRSM) adopted a similar theme \u2014 Road Safety Begins with Us \u2014 for its 2026 edition to encourage greater individual responsibility among all road users.<\/p>\n

Organised by the Traffic Police (TP) and Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC), and co-organised by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Ministry of Education (MOE), People\u2019s Association (PA), and Automobile Association of Singapore (AAS), SRSM 2026 was launched on Community Road Safety Day, 30 May 2025, at Our Tampines Hub (OTH).<\/p>\n

At the launch, Guest-of-Honour Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), began her speech by sharing results from a recent poll of 1,000 Singapore residents. \u201cOnly 61% of respondents said they find Singapore\u2019s roads safe,\u201d she stated. \u201c76% of respondents cited impatience as the top reason road users do not comply with traffic rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

To safeguard our roads, Ms Sim said that TP and MHA have deployed stronger enforcement, stiffer penalties, and smarter use of technology. This includes deployment of traffic violation enforcement cameras (TVEC), which have been operational island-wide since March 2026, detecting offences such as illegal U-turns. \u201cWe will continue to strengthen enforcement through upcoming changes to the Driver Improvement Points System, and the lowering of alcohol limits for drink driving. But enforcement alone cannot change a culture. It requires all of us to do our part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Sim also shared dynamic new initiatives aimed at improving road safety for all. These include neighbourhood road safety walks for pre-school children and senior citizens led by SPF officers, and road safety carnivals for migrant workers. \u201cWhen we choose to slow down, give way or wait, we are showing that the other person matters,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Following her speech, Ms Sim was joined on stage by Mr Alvin Chia, Senior Group Director, Traffic & Road Operations, LTA; Mr Patrick Kho PBM, Chairman, SRSC; and SAC Daniel Tan, Commander, TP; to officially kick off SRSM 2026. While they made their way, they were cheered on by Mr Zebra, SRSC\u2019s road safety mascot, and his striped friends.<\/p>\n

After a commemorative group picture with the enthusiastic crowd that had gathered at the Festive Plaza of OTH, guests enjoyed a musical skit about road safety awareness featuring celebrities such as Marcus Chin and Rahimah Rahim.<\/p>\n

Browsing The Booths\"\"<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ms Sim was then invited to visit the interactive booths set up at the Central Plaza of OTH. These were helmed by key SRSC partners, including SCDF, SMRT, SBS Transit, and PA.<\/p>\n

Ms Sim first visited the SPF booth, greeting the sprightly senior citizens of Goodlife Studio (Tampines 142) just before they were taken on a road safety tour. She was briefed on the necessity of child seats for children under 135cm at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital booth, and also tried her hand as a bus driver at the immersive SMRT VR simulator.<\/p>\n

Ms Sim concluded her tour at a stationary SBS Transit bus, flanked by glistening TP motorcycles. She posed for pictures with children riding the motorcycles, including nine-year-old Nathaniel Du.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids loved the skit and the songs,\u201d said Peter Du, Nathaniel\u2019s father. \u201cFor me, sitting in the driver\u2019s seat of a public bus was a memorable highlight. I never knew there were so many blind spots!\u201d<\/p>\n

At The AAS Booth\"\"<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Here, visitors could learn more about blind spots in heavy vehicles, from both the pedestrian\u2019s and driver\u2019s perspectives. For pedestrians, always stay alert even when you have the right of way. Make eye contact with drivers, and avoid standing too close to the vehicle. For drivers, maintain a four-second distance from heavy vehicles ahead. If you can\u2019t see their side mirrors, you\u2019re in their blind spot.<\/p>\n

The booth also highlighted the need for extra caution when driving outside Singapore. An example is RoadPlus+, an excess protection product that covers unexpected out-of-pocket charges during overseas vehicle rentals, including damage excluded by basic CDW and unforeseen incidents like theft or weather damage.\"\"<\/p>\n

A popular attraction here, especially among children, is the Mario Kart, which elicited plenty of groans when players crashed, thus driving home the message of the event\u2019s theme.08<\/p>\n
