The annual event was organised to raise funds for the SRSC\u2019s numerous programmes; it was also an opportunity for SRSC to thank sponsors for believing in its cause. The Guest of Honour for the evening was Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Home Affairs Mrs Josephine Teo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Launch of the Be A Road Safe Kid children\u2019s book<\/strong><br \/>\nA highlight of the dinner was the launch of a children\u2019s book by AA Singapore: Be A Road Safe Kid targets primary school children and aims to educate them on proper road safety behaviour through creative storylines and illustrations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CuXZXt9kCNE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The follow up to AA Singapore\u2019s first children\u2019s activity book, <em>Safe Kids on Roads<\/em>, launched in 2016, <em>Be A Road Safe Kid<\/em> puts across four key messages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The importance of buckling up and using child seat restraints in cars<\/li>\n<li>Practising safe pedestrian habits<\/li>\n<li>Understanding a vehicle\u2019s blind spots<\/li>\n<li>The safe use of PMDs and bicycles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The book can help children cultivate safe road habits as they are particularly at risk due to their small size. Moreover, they may not know how to accurately assess dangerous road conditions and react appropriately to them.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Minister Teo onstage for the book launch were AA Singapore President and SRSC Chairman Mr Bernard Tay, Traffic Police Commander Mr Gerald Lim, AA Singapore Deputy President Mr Low Beng Tin, and AA Singapore CEO Mr Lee Wai Mun. Minister Teo autographed the books to officiate its launch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Training vocational drivers<\/strong><br \/>\nIn her speech, Minister Teo revealed, \u201cWhile the overall situation has improved, there remain key areas of concern. In particular, vocational drivers, such as heavy vehicle drivers, continue to be over-represented in accidents. In 2017, heavy vehicles were involved in 10% of all road traffic accidents, despite only making up 5% of the vehicle population.\u201d She thus encouraged employers to make use of SkillsFuture Singapore\u2019s training grants to send workers to MOM-approved training programmes, such as AAS Academy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/aasacademy.com.sg\/portfolio-item\/crash-prevention-course\/\">Crash Prevention Course<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lower accident rate<\/strong><br \/>\nMr Bernard Tay also welcomed guests to the dinner; in his address, he noted, \u201cThe accident rate in 2017 has gone down once again, making it the lowest in six consecutive years. While the numbers have gone down, one accident is one too many. Accidents can be prevented if all road users observe and practise road safety measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-243\" src=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/aa-highway.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AIP_EVE_Thinkfarm_AAS-Highway_2018-10-22_053.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/aa-highway.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AIP_EVE_Thinkfarm_AAS-Highway_2018-10-22_053.jpg 667w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/aa-highway.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AIP_EVE_Thinkfarm_AAS-Highway_2018-10-22_053-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/aa-highway.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AIP_EVE_Thinkfarm_AAS-Highway_2018-10-22_053-280x420.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He announced that the SRSC had managed to raise more than $400,000, which would enable it to continue organising outreach events to educate the public and raise awareness of road safety.<\/p>\n<p>Among the measures SRSC has initiated are road safety videos, such as the Ms Savage series, which contains five episodes. Unveiled during the gala was the fourth, \u2018Motorcyclist Road Safety\u2019, which highlighted the importance of carrying out pre-ride checks, wearing appropriate gear, and being familiar with blind spots \u2014 all put across in a fun way by the presenter, Ms Savage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recognising road safety efforts<\/strong><br \/>\nThat evening also saw various road safety awards being given out to those that have actively promoted road safety through implementing safety policies and providing appropriate training to their drivers and riders. Drivers or riders who have been road safety role models were similarly recognised. Minister Teo presented a trophy and training vouchers to the awardees.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed the need to \u201cstep up efforts to promote and encourage the adoption of safe driving practices amongst vocational drivers\u201d. She asserted that the award winners had \u201cset the gold standard through their personal conduct\u201d. The prize sponsors for the champions in both the Company and Individual categories were AAS Academy and AA-SPCS Pte Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>Guests were entertained at the dinner by singer Deborah Jean Lee and the Police Quintet. They took turns to provide a repertoire of foot-tapping numbers.
