""To ensure that vehicles on our roads are properly maintained, the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) requires all road vehicles in Singapore to go through periodic vehicle inspections.

The purpose of a vehicle inspection is to ensure that vehicles meet roadworthiness and emission standards. This minimises vehicular breakdowns and road accidents due to wear-and-tear, contributing to improved road safety and reduced carbon emissions for a cleaner and safer environment.

What to expect during a vehicle inspection?

A vehicle inspection can tell a lot about the condition of your vehicle. A series of computerised tests to check carbon emissions, brake system efficiency, wheel alignment, steering mechanism, and the noise level of the exhaust system, is administered. This process is fairly quick, taking about 10 minutes.

Upon arriving at the inspection centre:

Step 1: Registration

Upon arrival, an inspector takes over the vehicle, confirms the vehicle’s identity and cruises it through the lane for inspection.

Step 2: Sideslip Test & Brake Test

The inspector measures the wheel alignment over the sideslip tester. Next, the efficiency of the brakes is examined by measuring the break performance and drag force.

Step 3: Emission Test

Exhaust emission tests are performed to ensure the vehicle meets the prevailing emission standards set by the National Environment Agency.

Step 4: Headlight Test, Sound Test and Above Carriage Check

Lighting systems are checked for proper functionality to ensure good driving visibility especially at night. Noise emission is measured to determine if it is within the permissible range. In addition, a complete physical check of the above carriage is conducted to assess items such as the tire condition, engine and chassis numbers, body works and modifications, if any.

Step 5: Under Carriage Check

Screening of vehicle parts and components such as the chassis, exhaust system, suspension system, steering system, as well as leakages are analysed to determine the condition of the vehicle.

Step 6: Issue Test Certificate

A Test Certificate is issued upon passing the inspection and the status report is provided to LTA in real-time to facilitate road tax renewal.
