This day has exhibited a spectacle unequalled in the annals of Singapore:<\/p>\n
The funeral of Chisang, a Chinese miser, who died April 2, at the age of 73, took place at 10 A.M. As in different ways it illustrates the features of heathenism among the Chinese, I was more particular in my observation, and shall be more minute in my account of it.<\/p>\n
I did not follow, but accepted an invitation of the English chaplain, to ride directly to the place of burial, at the distance of a mile. It was in a retired part of the Hokien burying ground, upon the N.W. side of a small eminence; a part of the way the bush had been recently cleared and a new road made to permit the passing of the mounted image. Here booths were erected, and entertainments provided for both Chinese and Europeans.<\/p>\n
Over the grave an atap roof was constructed. Presently the procession arrived, and after some parade the coffin was placed over the grave upon two sticks, when at the beating of the gongs, and considerable shouting of human voices, it was deposited in the yawning receptacle.<\/p>\n
The mourners had now taken their position in a place dug for the purpose, on the lower side of the grave, nearly on a level with the bottom of it, and separated only by a partition of earth, one or two feet thick, over which the sons looked into the grave and shed their tears profusely and with loud shrieks. The mourning females, like a flock of shepherdless sheep, were left to shriek for themselves, and were not present at this moment.<\/p>\n
The coffin being thus disposed of, the flowers that decorated and perfumed it thrown aside, the line and compass were employed, and much time consumed to have the corpse range exactly with the east and west, the head to the east. More attention is not usually bestowed in levelling the floors of an edifice. Many of the multitude now withdrew either to their homes or for some refreshment, the day being very warm. (Thermometer about 90 degree) The next thing I noticed was the presenting of 20 Spanish dollars to each of the grandchildren, counted on the spot and neatly rolled up in paper.<\/p>\n

\u5728\u5893\u7a74\u4e0a\u65b9\u8bbe\u6709\u4e9a\u7b54\u906e\u7bf7\u3002\u4e0d\u4e45\uff0c\u9001\u846c\u7684\u961f\u4f0d\u5230\u4e86\u3002\u7075\u67e9\u7ecf\u6570\u756a\u6e38\u884c\u540e\u88ab\u5b89\u653e\u5728\u5893\u7a74\u4e0a\u7684\u4e24\u6839\u6728\u68cd\u4e0a\u3002\u5728\u4e00\u9635\u6572\u9523\u6253\u9f13\u3001\u4eba\u58f0\u55a7\u54d7\u4e2d\uff0c\u68fa\u6728\u88ab\u7f6e\u5165\u655e\u5f00\u7684\u69fd\u4e2d\u3002\u54ed\u4e27\u961f\u8fd9\u65f6\u5df2\u5c31\u4f4d\uff0c\u805a\u96c6\u5728\u79bb\u5893\u7a74\u4e0b\u65b9\u4e00\u4e24\u82f1\u5c3a\u4e4b\u5904\u6316\u6398\u51fa\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u51e0\u4e4e\u548c\u5893\u7a74\u5e95\u90e8\u5e73\u9f50\u7684\u54ed\u4e27\u533a\u3002\u5b5d\u5b50\u4eec\u7acb\u4e8e\u5893\u7a74\u548c\u54ed\u4e27\u533a\u4e4b\u95f4\uff0c\u5bf9\u7740\u7075\u67e9\u6cea\u5d29\u54c0\u568e\u3002\u4e0d\u5728\u73b0\u573a\u7684\u54c0\u60bc\u5973\u7737\u72b9\u5982\u65e0\u7267\u7f8a\u4eba\u7684\u7ef5\u7f8a\u4e5f\u568e\u5555\u5927\u54ed\u3002<\/p>\n
