Homework—with subjects becoming increasingly difficult—it has become a challenge for many parents. That is why, knowing that a student care centre can provide a dedicated time and place for homework can be a welcome relief for both parents and students.

However, when it comes to homework supervision, it’s more than just completing a worksheet or two. The longer-term goal is to help children become increasingly capable of organising, attempting and managing their own school responsibilities with suitable guidance when needed.

One of the biggest concerns working parents have about the after-school hours is homework. Will it actually get done? Will somebody check it? And if a child does not understand the work, who helps?

These are reasonable questions. But parents will be glad to know that Brain Booster follows a school-first approach.

It isn’t just about putting children at a desk and calling it homework time. A meaningful homework routine consists of several stages: children need to know what work they have, have an opportunity to attempt it, receive guidance when they are genuinely stuck and have completed work checked appropriately. Areas that need reinforcement may then be revisited through revision.

Yes, sometimes when things get overwhelming or busy, it can be tempting for an adult to immediately step in when a child struggles. But always supplying the answer can unintentionally teach the child to wait for help rather than attempting to work on the question themselves.

Patient guidance is different. A trainer might encourage a child to reread a question, think about what they already know, identify where they became confused or try another approach. The exact level of support naturally depends on the child’s age and ability.

The objective is not to leave children struggling alone. It is to give them enough guidance to move forward while still allowing them to experience the satisfaction of solving something themselves.

Revision is a big part of taking that step to doing well in school and while it can help reinforce what children have already learned, it should not simply mean piling more work onto an already tired child. It should have a purpose—for example, consolidating an area that needs more practice or reinforcing concepts covered at school.

At our Brain Booster centres in Hougang and Kovan, revision forms part of our approach. We believe that structured academic revision with personalised guidance helps children develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive.

Is your child attending tuition lessons as well? If so, it would be worth to find out if the student care centre assists with tuition homework, under what circumstances, and whether school homework takes priority. Getting a clear idea of this helps avoid mismatched expectations after enrolment.
