You’ve narrowed down your choices of student care. Maybe you picked somewhere close to your child’s school or somewhere that focuses on academics. With so many options available, it can be tempting to compare centres based on location, fees or the number of programmes offered. However, before making your final decision, take a closer look at what happens behind the scenes.

Working parents should ask practical questions about the daily routine, homework supervision, pickup, meals, educators, communication, fees, reviews and availability. The best fit is not necessarily the centre with the longest programme list; it is the one whose everyday approach matches your child’s needs and your family’s priorities.

First up, ask to see a typical timetable or check online for the daily schedule. When do children eat, rest, complete homework, revise and take part in other activities? This will give you a clear idea of what your child’s daily routine would look like and would help you understand what the programme feels like beyond marketing descriptions.

One of the upsides of sending your child to a student care is more often than not the support they’ll receive with schoolwork. But what does “homework support” actually mean? Each centre might have a different approach when it comes to handling school responsibilities. Ask whether staff check completion, correct mistakes, explain difficult work and support different primary levels appropriately. If your child also attends tuition, clarify whether tuition homework is supported and what takes priority.

Eyeing a student care centre located near your child’s school? Do not assume a centre serves a school simply because it is nearby. Confirm the current school coverage, pickup arrangements, any restrictions or additional charges, and what happens if school dismissal times change.

Knowing who will be looking after your child is just as important as understanding their daily schedule. So be sure to ask about the educator or trainer ratio, staff experience and how children are supervised throughout the afternoon. The useful question is not only the headline ratio, but how the centre maintains attention, safety and continuity in practice.

Be sure you know what the student care fees cover. And when comparing centres, ask about meals, holiday care, materials, transport or pickup, optional programmes and other charges. Promotions can be attractive, but clarity about the everyday programme is more important for a long-term decision. For Brain Booster located in Hougang, there is also the option to add on various revision modules for your child.

Parents, working or not, are a busy bunch and need useful, timely information. So ask how attendance, announcements, progress and concerns are communicated. It’ll also help to find out how quickly enquiries are normally answered and who parents should contact when something needs attention.

Speak to other parents about their recommendations or reviews of the centre you’re keen on. Knowing other parents whose kids are already enrolled in the centre certainly helps to get a feel for the place and how it’s truly run. Comments about homework, communication, staff care, routines and long-term experience are often more useful than a rating alone.

If you have yet to make a decision but you’re leaning towards a particular student care centre, check if they have a place available. If, in the unfortunate event they don’t, ask whether the centre has a waitlist, future-intake registration or another appropriate option. Accurate availability information is better than assuming a place will be open when you are ready to enrol.

Choose the centre that can clearly explain what your child will experience each day and provide evidence that supports its promises. For families comparing options in Hougang or Kovan, this may include community-based providers such as Brain Booster as well as larger chains and school-based student care centres.
