This groundbreaking collaboration will provide an innovative solution that not only improves convenience by providing charging devices, but also enhances the entertainment experience to a new level while simultaneously charging devices.

Click here to download the ChargeSPOT™ application.

*Detailed locations can be checked from within the application.

■ For More Information

【For inquiries regarding this topic】
T-Gaia Corporation
Smart Life Business Division, Global and Innovation Promotion Department, Strategic Business Development Team, Takagi
E-MAIL： ke-takagi@t-gaia.co.jp

【For inquiries regarding press releases】
T-Gaia Corporation Business Planning Division IR・Media Relations Team
TEL：03-6409-1010 / E-MAIL：tg-kouhou-ir@t-gaia.co.jp

■ Regarding CHEERS HOLDINGS PTE. The initiative, which will conclude today, saw a total of 15.6 million plastic bags saved with about 7.8 million bring-your-own-bag (BYOB) transactions. It also announced a one-year extension of the initiative at the same stores[1] following positive customer response, starting 12 November 2020.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group CEO, FairPrice Group, said, “The “No Plastic Bag” initiative is part of the FairPrice Plastic Bag Management Programme which aims to reduce excessive use of plastic bags and at the same time encourage a behavioural change in customers. We are encouraged by the positive customer response garnered; the significant number of plastic bags saved in this short span of one year is a testimony of the greater public awareness for the environment.”

Highlights of Year-Long Pilot Initiative

Over the past year, about seven in 10 customers who shopped at participating supermarkets chose to BYOB or refused plastic bags, while close to nine in 10 customers BYOB or refused a bag at participating convenience stores.

While the majority of the customers supported this initiative by bringing their own bags, there were also challenges faced on the ground such as having to manage customers who demanded for excessive plastic bags after paying for them.

Mr Seah added, “We are thankful to customers for their support and understanding towards this sustainability effort. Regardless of the challenges that we face, we remain committed to the cause and we encourage more retailers to join us in making a collective effort towards reducing plastic bag use.”

FairPrice currently remains the only supermarket chain to continue charging for plastic bags at participating outlets in Singapore.

Extension of the “No Plastic Bag” Initiative

Customers who require bags can purchase them at S$0.20 per transaction (FairPrice, FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Xtra stores) or S$0.10 per transaction (Cheers, FairPrice Xpress stores). Proceeds raised from the initiative will go towards supporting environmental and community causes. Over the past year, about S$600,000 was raised from the plastic bag charges.

FairPrice will also continue public education efforts to raise awareness on the importance of plastic waste reduction. FairPrice continues to work closely with the government and organisations to advocate for the reduction of single-use plastics, such as supporting the Say Yes to Waste Less campaign by the National Environment Agency and organising webinar in partnership with Eco-Business.

The full list of participating stores can be found in Annex A.

FairPrice targets to save 30 million plastic bags per annum by 2030 through a holistic approach that involves enhancing internal practices to be more eco-friendly, public education, partnerships and sponsorships.

MEDIA RELEASE

Cheers, in partnership with Visa, launches new A.I enabled unmanned and cashless store in Tampines

Revamped concept store utilises various front-line retail technologies to provide enhanced convenience to customers, catering to evolving needs

New concept store is part of ongoing efforts to drive productivity and break new ground in rethinking retail for the convenience store industry

(Front row) Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Health and Grassroots Adviser for Tampines GRC GROs; Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group CEO, FairPrice Group; (Back row; from left) Mr Kunal Chatterjee, Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei, Visa; Mr Tng Ah Yiam, Chief Procurement Officer, FairPrice Group; Mr Chua Boon Keat, General Manager, Cheers, at the launch of Cheers new A.I enabled unmanned and cashless convenience store at Our Tampines Hub.

SINGAPORE, 12 December 2020 – Cheers, a subsidiary of NTUC FairPrice, in partnership with Visa, the world’s leader in digital payments, today announced the launch of its revamped unmanned and cashless convenience store, located conveniently in the heartlands of Tampines. The concept store employs Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and image recognition technology to empower customers to self-serve and boost operational efficiency and productivity.

The launch event was graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Health and Grassroots Adviser for Tampines GRC GROs.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group CEO of FairPrice Group, said, “NTUC FairPrice continues to embrace innovation and develop new service concepts to enhance the shopping experience for customers. We complement the efforts at promoting a self-service culture in Singapore through our unmanned store concepts along other initiatives that facilitate efficient service delivery. By collaborating with our strategic partner Visa, we are able to leverage on our respective strengths and experience to further propel the retail industry forward.”

Customers who patronise the new store only need to pick out the items they wish to purchase and walk out of the store. The advanced A.I. system is smart enough to detect the items they have picked out and will automatically process payment for the items when they exit the premises. This saves customers the hassle from having to queue to make payment and resources required to man the store. The unmanned Cheers store is expected to save up to 240 man hours per week.

Going cashless as a nation

The global pandemic has prompted a surge in cashless payments as consumers turn towards eCommerce or try to avoid handling cash due to hygiene concerns. The latest Visa COVID-19 Sensor found that two-thirds (66 per cent) of consumers in Singapore prefer paying with cashless payment methods (cards, mobile devices, wearables), and nearly four in five are likely to continue using digital payments even after the pandemic (78 per cent).

The Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes Study found that more than two-thirds (67 per cent) of consumers in Singapore are interested in “zero checkout” technology or eliminating the physical checkout process to enhance their shopping experience. The ‘time saving’ aspect of not having to stand in line to make payment is largely driving the high interest in zero checkout experiences, with three in five (60 per cent) citing this as their key motivation.

“Today, consumers want shopping experiences that are fast and seamless but also safe and secure. Zero checkout technology is an innovative way of delivering that intuitive retail experience to shoppers, offering convenience without sacrificing security,” Kunal Chatterjee, Visa Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei, said. “This is the first time that Visa is partnering with our retail merchant partner to create this concept of kind in Southeast Asia, and we want to help our merchants power the future of retail and create innovative retail experiences so that consumers and businesses can pay and be paid effortlessly,” he added.

This unmanned store concept is also aligned with Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative, which aims to transform and digitise our economy to keep Singapore vibrant and competitive by utilising technology to make lives better.

Cheers introduced its first unmanned and cashless store concept at Nanyang Polytechnic in 2017 followed by an additional two more unmanned stores at the National University of Singapore. The store today will be its fourth operational unmanned store.

Visit the Cheers unmanned store

To shop at the store, customers will need to download the mobile app that generates a unique QR code customers can use to gain entry to the store, or via facial recognition technology. Products picked up by customers will be automatically added to their virtual shopping cart, and they can skip the queue as they will be charged to the payment method that they have added in their app.

The unmanned Cheers store is located at Our Tampines Hub (1 Tampines Walk #01-01 Singapore 528523) and operates 24 hours daily.

MEDIA RELEASE

Cheers, FairPrice Foundation and Yeo Hiap Seng announces joint donation of S$20,000 to help the less fortunate in seventh year of collaboration

Cheers, FairPrice Foundation and Yeo Hiap Seng jointly present S$20,000 to TOUCH Community Services this year

S$0.20 was pledged for every purchase of Yeo’s beverages at Cheers and FairPrice Xpress stores islandwide

Above, from left to right: Ms Candice Heng, Head of Singapore Sales, YHS (Singapore); Mr Chua Boon Keat, General Manager, Cheers and Mr Jonas Kor, General Manager, FairPrice Foundation present a cheque of S$20,000 to Ms Joyce Hope Ang, Assistant Director of Partnership, Volunteer Management and Communications

SINGAPORE, 18 December 2020 – Cheers, the convenience store arm of NTUC FairPrice, NTUC FairPrice Foundation (FairPrice Foundation), and food and beverage company Yeo Hiap Seng Ltd (Yeo Hiap Seng) today announced a joint donation of S$20,000 to TOUCH Community Services (TOUCH). The concept store, which also serves as a training facility for Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Business Management, employs front-line retail technologies to empower customers to self-serve and back-end systems to optimise business operations and boost productivity.

The launch event was graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mr S. Iswaran, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry).

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice said, “NTUC FairPrice constantly innovates and implements new service concepts to enhance the shopping experience for customers’ convenience. This unmanned store concept aims to challenge industry norms by bringing about a step change in the retail industry through balancing efficient service delivery and operations capability via technology and at the same time, cultivate a self-service culture in Singapore.”

This initiative is in line with the Food Services and Retail Industry Transformation Maps (ITMs) launched last year by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) and SPRING Singapore. Both ITMs empower businesses to embrace technology and take steps towards transformation. The unmanned convenience store is an innovative solution that complements the brick-and-mortar business concept by creating value for both retailers and a new generation of consumers through productivity and convenience improvements.

Serving customers with technology

The unmanned Cheers store will feature a new unified self-checkout system that incorporates various cashless payment modes including NETS, credit card, EZ-Link, mobile and contactless payment – eliminating the need for multiple payment terminals to enhance user-friendliness, making it more intuitive for customers.

This unmanned Cheers store will also be the first convenience store in Singapore that offers NETS payment by QR code, a new form of payment that utilizes DBS Paylah, OCBC Pay Anyone and UOB Mighty.

Next-generation vending machines will provide customers, looking for a quick bite or a hot meal, with a variety of ready-to-eat foods ranging from pastries and pizza to local delights like fried rice and “hor fun”.

At the back-end, the store will gear up to utilise data and video analytics to customize the store’s inventory to suit customer preference by analysing purchasing behaviour within the store. An auto-ordering system also eliminates the need to manually track and order stocks while minimizing out-of-stock situations to enhance customer satisfaction.

Boosting productivity and redesigning jobs

Converting the Cheers store to an unmanned and cashless format will save up to 180 man hours per week. The boost in productivity stems from streamlining processes as there is no need for cashiers to be present to process payments and bag customer purchases. The automated point-of-sale self-checkout system also eliminates the need to manually perform cash reconciliation and physically bank in the day’s takings.

Beyond this, the back-end auto-ordering system eliminates the need to manually order products when stock levels are low, thereby boosting productivity and optimising the store’s inventory.

The savings in manpower will allow staff to be redeployed and up-skilled to focus on higher-value jobs such as supply chain management, customer relationship management, digital marketing and data analytics.

Training the next generation of retail professionals

The unmanned Cheers store doubles up as a training facility for NYP’s School of Business Management students specialising in retail, where they will be able to gain hands-on experience running a business and test innovative ideas in a real-world environment.

Ms Jeanne Liew, Principal & CEO, Nanyang Polytechnic, commented: “We are moving our students up the value chain. They are gaining new skills and working with new technologies, such as data analytics and IoT. I would like to thank our partners for this key opportunity.”

Ms Siong Liyi, a third-year Nanyang Polytechnic School of Business Management student, who works at the unmanned Cheers store, said: “I’m glad to have the opportunity to gain a head start and this format is where the future of retail business will be. I am learning skills that are ahead of the curve.”

The store is fully run by the students and over 50 are selected annually. They are deployed in several batches throughout the year to run the store.

Visit the Cheers unmanned store

To shop at the store, customers will first need to download and register themselves on a newly developed “Shop It Yourself” mobile app that will generate a unique QR code customers can use to gain entry to the store, which is locked automatically. The app is currently being tested by a sample group of NYP students and will be available at Apple and Android app stores by 4 August 2017.
