This is commonly triggered by a genito-urinary infection or gastroenteritis. The onset of joint swelling, aches and pains tend to occur 1 to 3 weeks following an infection that you may not be aware of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The condition is slightly more common in men but can also affect women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although reactive arthritis is uncommon, we occasionally encounter the condition in primary care. This can occur over the larger joints, such as knee joints or smaller joints, such as the fingers and feet, wrist, elbow, or ankles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commonly, the affected joints are from the lower part of the body, and the symptoms tend to present asymmetrically.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower back pain is a common presenting symptom due to the underlying inflamed lower spine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Urethritis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One may present with abnormal urinary symptoms such as blood in the urine, pain, burning, itching sensations during urination, and increased frequency or discomfort during urination.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In women, one may present with abnormal vaginal discharge and lower pelvic discomfort, suggesting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/cervicitis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20370814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cervicitis<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In men, one may notice urinary\/urethral discharge, occasionally experiencing testicular pain or swelling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conjunctivitis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One may present with a red, gritty, uncomfortable \u2013 suggesting eye inflammation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the typical triad symptoms, patients may also present with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Enthesitis<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inflammation of the tendons and ligaments that connect the bone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One may present with heel or sole pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skin rash<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One may present with rashes over the feet, palms, ulcers in the mouth and tongue, and rash over the penis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cardiac\/heart symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rarely, one may present with chest discomfort, shortness of breath on exertion, heart murmur, or fainting spells suggesting underlying heart involvement.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-15-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"difficulty breathing\" class=\"wp-image-14479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-15-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-15-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-15-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-15-1536x1023.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-15.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shortness of breath can be a symptom of reactive arthritis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reactive arthritis and STDs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When reactive arthritis happens due to an underlying <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27037393\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexually transmitted disease<\/a>, it is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27037393\/\">sexually acquired reactive arthritis<\/a> [3] (SARA).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reactive arthritis can be triggered following an infection of the genito-urinary system secondary to sexually <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8670327\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transmitted<\/a> [4] pathogens. STDs such as <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24828551\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chlamydia trachomatis<\/a> [5], <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/gonorrhea\/\">Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/mycoplasma-genitalium\/\">mycoplasma genitalium<\/a>, and ureaplasma urealyticum can cause infective urethritis and are associated with SARA.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SARA should be considered as one of the differentials when a young patient's profile is presented with unexplained acute joint inflammatory symptoms. Sexual history should be screened, and appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/std-test\/\">STD tests<\/a> should be offered to avoid further delay in the treatment of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While abnormal joint symptoms are seen in SARA, patients may also present with abnormal urinary symptoms such as urethral discharge, pain during urination, increased urinary frequency, and testicular pain and swelling in men. In women, one may notice abnormal vaginal discharge, spotting in between periods, spotting after sex, or painful intercourse. Also, reactive arthritis can occur in HIV patients. In these patients, the symptoms progression of reactive arthritis can be faster, and the condition can be more severe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HIV infection should always be screened and considered as a differential in an unexplained inflammatory arthritis symptom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can a non-STD infection cause reactive arthritis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, it is possible. Non-STD infections involved in reactive arthritis include bacteria that cause gastroenteritis or dysentery (a severe form of diarrhoea). They are genetically programmed to aid the immune system to differentiate the body\u2019s own cells and noxious external particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of HLA-B27 can be detected through simple blood tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When should I see a doctor if I have concerns about reactive arthritis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should see a doctor if you have abnormal joint symptoms following recent diarrhoea or genital infection. If you have concerns about exposure to STDs, you should also <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/contact-us\/\">see a doctor<\/a> for further checkups and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should I expect when I see my doctor for reactive arthritis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/dbclinic.com.sg\/about-us\/\">Your doctor<\/a> will obtain a medical history that includes your sexual history.
