{"id":864,"date":"2023-01-31T07:05:39","date_gmt":"2023-01-31T07:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/encyclopedia.mp.com.sg\/?p=864"},"modified":"2023-02-23T06:53:02","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T06:53:02","slug":"incoterms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/encyclopedia.mp.com.sg\/incoterms\/","title":{"rendered":"Incoterms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incoterms, also known as international commercial terms, are a set of rules that buyers (consignees) and sellers (consignors) can agree upon during a commercial transaction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They outline key responsibilities (e.g. cost, risks of loss and damage, movement of goods) of each party during the different stages of trade, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Loading, unloading, delivery and terminal charges of shipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customs clearance, duties and taxes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cargo insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Import and export documentation and licenses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"recommendation\"><div class=\"recommendation-content\">\n<b><i>Summary<\/i><\/b><br><br>\n<li>Incoterms are a set of rules determined by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) that outline the responsibilities of consignors and consignees in a trade.\n<\/li><li>Under Incoterms\u00ae 2020, there are 11 rules split into 2 categories, \u2018any mode of transport\u2019 and \u2018sea and inland waterway transport\u2019.\n<\/li><li>Some common incoterms include FCA (free carrier), DAP (delivered at place), DDP (delivered duty paid) and CIF (cost insurance and freight).<br>\n<\/li><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-are-incoterms-important\"><strong>Why Are Incoterms Important<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incoterms are important mainly because they provide clarity for <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/encyclopedia.mp.com.sg\/consignor\/\">consignors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/encyclopedia.mp.com.sg\/consignee\/\">consignees<\/a> during their trade dealings, offering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clearly defined responsibilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As incoterms cover various and specific aspects of trade, they are able to clearly define the tasks, costs and risks each party is responsible for. This reduces the risk of conflict between both parties (e.g. if goods are damaged or lost).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ease of communication<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The widespread use of incoterms ensures that businesses around the world may communicate and trade effectively in spite of language or cultural differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased efficiency<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses that are well-versed in incoterms are able to negotiate trade terms swiftly and more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"areas-not-covered-by-incoterms\"><strong>Areas Not Covered By Incoterms<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some aspects of a trade not addressed by incoterms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conditions of a sale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What goods are being sold and their prices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When and how payment will be made<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the ownership of goods will be transferred from consignor to consignee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What documents are required for <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.mp.com.sg\/custom-clearance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">customs clearance<\/a> (e.g. Bill of Lading, <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/encyclopedia.mp.com.sg\/commercial-invoice\/\">commercial invoice<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/encyclopedia.mp.com.sg\/packing-slip\/\">packing slip<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, many businesses work with freight forwarders, like <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.mp.com.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M&amp;P International Freights<\/a>, to ensure most areas of their trades are satisfactory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"11-incoterms%25c2%25ae-2020-rules\"><strong>11 Incoterms\u00ae 2020 Rules<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official incoterms is determined by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The latest set of globally recognized rules were published in the Incoterms\u00ae 2020. There are 11 rules, sorted into 2 categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rules for any mode of transport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rules for sea and inland waterway transport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"incoterm-rules-for-any-mode-of-transport\"><strong>Incoterm Rules for Any Mode of Transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These 7 incoterms may be used for any mode of transport, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/encyclopedia.mp.com.sg\/air-freight\/\">air freight<\/a>, sea freight and <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.mp.com.sg\/trucking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trucking<\/a>. The most common ones include the FCA, DAP, DDP and EXW terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"exw-ex-works\"><strong>EXW (Ex Works)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EXW is typically regarded as the incoterm with the least obligation for the consignor. Once loaded, the consignee assumes responsibility for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cost and risks of transportation to the final destination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Import clearance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both parties may decide to allow the consignor to make transport arrangements at the consignee\u2019s cost and risk.
