Some, however, may experience prolonged fever, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, recurrent infections. Some patients may also experience flu-like symptoms that appear two to four weeks after exposure. <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74456a2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74456a2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The HIV test is a <strong>non-fasting blood test.<\/strong><\/p><p>HIV tests detect HIV antigens and antibodies to HIV in your blood. \u00a0<strong>The results are usually out within a few days.<\/strong><\/p><p>However, <strong>HIV tests <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cannot<\/span> detect HIV immediately after infection.<\/strong> The virus has a <i>window period<\/i> &#8211; which is the time between HIV exposure and when a blood test can detect HIV in the body.<\/p><p>As such, if your initial HIV test is negative, it is recommended to repeat the blood test again:<\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li><strong>6 weeks after exposure<\/strong><ul><li>Many lab HIV tests can detect most infections by this time<\/li><li>A negative result here is highly reassuring<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li><strong>4 months after exposure<\/strong><ul><li>By 4 months, HIV tests that detect both antigens and antibodies in your blood are considered conclusive.<\/li><li>If your result is negative, you do not need further testing unless you have another potential exposure to HIV.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-025b66d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"025b66d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Understanding how HIV is transmitted\u2014and how it isn\u2019t\u2014allows us to make informed choices about our health.
