Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterised by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, and chest tightness, which tend to vary over time in frequency or intensity1,<\/sup><\/a>2<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asthma affects approximately 5% of Singaporeans aged 18 to 69 years2<\/sup><\/a>. In Singapore, 1 in every 3 patients with asthma aged 12 years and older has experienced an exacerbation in the previous year, and 1 in every 2 patients has missed work or school due to asthma in the previous year2<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asthma, previously thought to only affect the lungs, is now understood to involve the entire respiratory tract as part of a systemic airway disease3<\/sup><\/a>. This is supported by its frequent co-occurrence with other atopic disorders, particularly allergic rhinitis3<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n

What are the Symptoms of Asthma?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Asthma, a chronic disease affecting the airways, is characterised by airway hyperresponsiveness resulting in repeated occurrences of similar symptoms in both adults and children, which include:2,<\/sup><\/a>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
