The infection usually starts at the <\/span><\/span>nasopharynx region<\/span><\/span> and spread<\/span>s<\/span> to the <\/span><\/span>lower respiratory <\/span>tract causing pneumonia<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> to the <\/span><\/span>sinuses<\/span> area<\/span> causing sinusitis<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> or to the <\/span><\/span>middle ear <\/span>causing otitis media<\/span><\/span> (ear infection)1,3<\/sup><\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The average<\/span> yearly<\/span> hospitalisation rate for pneumococcal disease <\/span>from the year 2000<\/span> to <\/span>2008 in Singapore was recorded to be <\/span><\/span>9<\/span><\/span><\/b> in every <\/span><\/span>100,000<\/span><\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/span>persons4<\/sup><\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Types of Pneumococcal Vaccines<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Two types of pneumococcal vaccines help to provide heightened immunisation and protection against the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria2,6<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Vaccines that protect against pneumococcal disease are made from a substance called polysaccharide that comes from the bacteria that causes the disease, which is S. pneumoniae. These vaccines are called pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV) or pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)7<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Specifically, PCV13 safeguards against the 13 prevalent strains of pneumococcal bacteria that are responsible for pneumococcal disease, whereas PPSV23 shields against 23 strains2<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Pneumococcal vaccination is generally safe on most occasions; however, like all other vaccines, it can cause several side effects, both mild and severe ones9-11<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n
