What a Lavender Violet Spinel Actually Is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lavender violet spinel sits at the quiet end of the spinel family. Where a Mahenge spinel<\/a> reads as hot pink or neon red, this stone is a soft pastel that moves between lilac and violet depending on the light. The colour comes from traces of iron in the crystal. The best examples hold an even tone, without the brown or grey cast that pulls a lot of purple stones down in value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two things make it practical for a ring worn every day. Spinel is Mohs 8 on the hardness scale, which sits between quartz and sapphire and is hard enough for daily wear. And unlike most sapphire and ruby sold today, spinel is almost always untreated, so the colour in the stone is the colour it came out of the ground with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission: a 2.0 Carat Cushion Spinel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This ring was built around a 2.0 carat cushion-cut lavender violet spinel. The brief was for something that would not shout, a stone that looked considered rather than showy, and the pastel violet did exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Halo Setting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We set the spinel in 18K white gold with a halo of micro-pave diamonds. On a pastel centre stone a halo earns its place: it frames the soft colour so it does not get lost against the skin, and it lifts the apparent size of the centre without paying for a larger stone. The pave runs a short way down the shoulders so the ring stays bright from every angle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
