It is a <strong>unilateral declaration<\/strong>, prepared by a law firm, stating that an individual will be known by a new name from the date of execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use a Deed Poll to change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First names;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surnames;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spelling or sequence of names;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add or remove names (e.g. Chinese characters, baptismal or religious names).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once signed, the Deed Poll can be submitted to the <strong>Immigration &amp; Checkpoints Authority (ICA)<\/strong> and other institutions to update your official records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-can-execute-a-deed-poll\"><strong>Who can execute a Deed Poll?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adults (21 years and above)<\/strong>: You can sign a Deed Poll on your own behalf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Minors (below 21 years)<\/strong>: A Deed Poll must be signed by the <strong>minor\u2019s parents or legal guardians<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-one-parent-sign-the-deed-poll-for-a-minor\"><strong>Can one parent sign the Deed Poll for a minor?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No, not in most cases.<\/strong><br>Under <strong>ICA\u2019s current policy<\/strong>, <strong>both parents must sign<\/strong> the Deed Poll for a minor under 21, regardless of custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exceptions apply only if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One parent is <strong>deceased<\/strong> (with no guardian appointed); <strong>or<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The signing parent has a valid <strong>court order<\/strong> authorising them to change the child\u2019s name <strong>without the other parent\u2019s consent<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u26a0\ufe0f Having <strong>sole custody is not sufficient<\/strong>. If the other parent is uncontactable or refuses to consent, a court order is still required.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-a-deed-poll-legally-recognised-in-singapore\"><strong>Is a Deed Poll legally recognised in Singapore?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.
