While commercial kits are available, we decide to get our hands wet and dirty to make one from raw materials and bits and pieces of electrical apparatus as described a <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/imatter.com.sg\/science-tuition-class-practical-hands-on-making-a-potato-battery\/\">previous post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, we revisit the potato battery and attempt to make one out of fruit\/vegetable other than a potato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theory of Our Battery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a good discussion of how a potato battery works, refer to our <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/imatter.com.sg\/science-tuition-class-practical-hands-on-making-a-potato-battery\/\">previous post<\/a> which mentioned the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reactivity_series\" target=\"_blank\">Reactivity Series<\/a> or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chemguide.co.uk\/physical\/redoxeqia\/ecs.html\" target=\"_blank\">Electrochemical Series<\/a>. It also talked about the potato acting as an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/electrolyte\" target=\"_blank\">electrolyte <\/a>to conduct an electric current within the battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this experiment during our Science class, we repeated the use of a copper strip and a zinc strip as the electrodes. They are relatively cheap and easy to obtain and give good results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time round, we decided to use alternative <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"electrolytes  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/electrolyte\" target=\"_blank\">electrolytes <\/a>for our battery. Three common household foods were used &#8211; lemon, orange, tomato. For a control, the good old potato was thrown into the mix. Become adaptable and you will realise that a Potato Battery need not be made from a Potato.<\/li><li>Real-life work is likely to go through several or many iterations before it can work. Experimental work is a microcosm of real life. Do not expect something to work on the first try.<\/li><li>Attaining success through failures is sweet. The look on our students&#8217; faces upon lighting up the LED was priceless.<\/li><li>To us, Science is more than just a subject.
