Located approximately 5.6 kilometres off the coast of Singapore, this culture-rich destination is home to picturesque views, ancient relics, sacred temples, and live tortoises!

There is no denying that the Southern Islands have abundant histories. But if there is one that is a must-see for culture buffs, it is Kusu Island. There are multiple versions of the legend of Kusu Island, but almost all of them involve a giant tortoise turning itself into an island to save people from drowning – which is how the island got its name! Kusu Island directly translates to “Tortoise Island” in Chinese.

So, if you are looking for a cultural retreat, check out this list of 3 things you must do on your next visit to Kusu Island.

1. Make some wishes

Kusu Island attracts plenty of people annually as many flock to the island to pray for prosperity and good health. Situated in Kusu Island Temple is a lotus-shaped wishing well.

Inside the concrete structure are several bells in the centre. All you need to do is make a wish and toss a coin into the well (be sure to aim for one of the bells!). It is believed that if your coin hits the bell, your wish will come true. So don’t forget to bring along some spare change, and who knows, you might have your wish granted!

2. Visit the tortoise sanctuary

If there is one thing you absolutely must not miss during your trip to Kusu Island, it is undoubtedly the tortoise sanctuary.

Head towards the heart of the island and hundreds of tortoises may be found wading calmly in the sanctuary. They come in all sorts of different shapes, sizes, and shell patterns, so you can have fun spotting them.

Fun fact: Did you know that tortoises are known to be a symbol of longevity? Besides the sanctuary, a couple of tortoises may also be found within the sacred grounds of the Kusu Island Temple!

3. Chill out by the beach

Among the Southern Islands of Singapore, Lazarus Island is by far the most popular when it comes to beaches. However, Kusu Island’s beach is definitely worth a visit as well.

Featuring crystal clear waters and white sand, the beach is relatively untouched and pristine, making it the perfect place to chill out, relax or even have a picnic. For those who are a little more adventurous, you’d be happy to know that Kusu Island’s calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkelling, thanks to the marine biodiversity conservation efforts.

Plus, if you head over to the northern lagoon, you’d be able to spot the skyline of the Marina Bay area right from the beach!

Getting to Kusu Island

Ready for a day trip filled with culture and fun?
