Whether you have always had them, or a new one appears, understanding moles and what they could potentially mean for your skin health is important.<\/p><h2>What are moles?<\/h2><p>Moles, or nevi (singular: nevus), are small, dark brown spots on the skin composed of melanocytes, or pigment-forming cells [1]. Moles can be present at birth or form throughout your life. Typically, moles form in parts of the body exposed to the sun.<\/p><h3>Types of moles<\/h3><ul><li><strong>Common moles<\/strong> \u2013 Common moles are typical moles we see on our body, they are usually small (&lt; 5 mm) and appear on parts of the body exposed to the sun. Common moles may also be called acquired melanocytic nevi.<\/li><li><strong>Congenital moles<\/strong> \u2013 Congenital moles, or congenital melanocytic nevi, are moles that are present at birth, and may involve the deeper layers of the dermis. Although congenital moles are typically present at birth, some may also develop within the first 2 to 3 years of life [1].<\/li><li><strong>Atypical moles (dysplastic nevi)<\/strong> \u2013 Dysplastic nevi are moles that do not look like common moles, they may be larger, composed of different colours, have irregular borders, or appear raised [2]. These moles may be of clinical concern and hence are biopsied by dermatologists or healthcare providers.<\/li><\/ul><h2>How are moles caused?<\/h2><p>The exact causes of moles are not clearly understood. A common tool used as a comparison is a pencil eraser.<\/li><li><strong>E<\/strong>volution\/Elevation \u2013 The mole changes or evolves in shape or size, and may be elevated or raised.<\/li><\/ul><p>If you have moles with these characteristics, or notice these changes on a mole over a short period of time, it is highly recommended to get a dermatologist to assess the mole. Several helpful tips to take pictures and document changes of the mole include:<\/p><ul><li>Taking pictures every day<\/li><li>Maintain the same lighting conditions or take the picture on the same time of day<\/li><li>Maintain the same angle and magnification when taking pictures<\/li><li>Placing a ruler or a coin next to the mole for size comparison<\/li><\/ul><h2>Signs your mole may be skin cancer<\/h2><p>In addition to the features described in the ABCDE guideline, moles at risk of malignancy, or which are malignant may show the following characteristics:<\/p><ul><li>Sudden changes of a mole<\/li><li>Itching or burning sensation on the mole<\/li><li>Scaly or rough appearance of the mole<\/li><li>The mole may ooze or crust<\/li><li>Wounds that do not heal, or returns after healing<\/li><li>A mass or lump that grows quickly<\/li><li>Swollen lymph nodes<\/li><\/ul><p>In any case of doubt, it is always encouraged to visit a dermatologist for a thorough examination. Early detection of cancerous lesions allows treatment to be given early, preventing the spread of cancer cells. Once cancer has spread, it is more difficult to treat and manage, hence why early treatment can be life-saving.<\/p><h2>When is mole removal recommended?<\/h2><p>Although moles are typically harmless and do not always need treatment or removal, many people opt to get them removed for the following reasons:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Cosmetic reasons<\/strong> \u2013 Moles that are aesthetically bothersome, large, or located in prominent areas may be removed for cosmetic reasons.<\/li><li><strong>Practical reasons<\/strong> \u2013 Some moles may be prone to irritation or pain from clothing or friction due to their location or size.<\/li><li><strong>Potential malignancy<\/strong> \u2013 Moles that are suspected of developing into melanoma can be removed before it becomes malignant.<\/li><\/ul><h2>How are moles removed?<\/h2><p>Typically, your dermatologist can recommend you to get a mole removed after assessment and diagnosis of the mole. A mole removal procedure can be done by the following treatments:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Surgical excision<\/strong> \u2013 Surgical excision involves using a scalpel to cut out the mole and its surrounding skin or tissue, the remaining skin will be stitched back together. This method is typically done for potentially malignant moles, or large and raised moles.<\/li><li><strong>Shave excision<\/strong> \u2013 Shave excision involves the dermatologist using a razor to shave off the growth from the skin\u2019s surface. This method leaves minimal scarring.<\/li><li><strong>Laser removal<\/strong> \u2013 Laser removals involve using lasers to precisely target the dark pigments of the mole. Laser removals can be done on common or congenital moles [4, 5].<\/li><li><strong>Electrocautery<\/strong> \u2013 Electrocautery involves the use of heat from a handheld device to destroy the mole tissues. Electrocautery also reduces bleeding.<\/li><li><strong>Cryotherapy<\/strong> \u2013 Cryotherapy involves the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the tissues of the mole, causing it to die and slough off.<\/li><\/ul><p>Before undergoing a mole removal procedure, it is important to get a proper assessment by a qualified dermatologist. Certain methods of removal, such as lasers, electrocautery, and cryotherapy, do not provide tissue samples for a biopsy. If your dermatologist suspects a mole for potential malignancy, they may recommend surgical excision, which can be followed by tissue biopsy for a proper diagnosis. Some removal methods are also at risk of mole recurrence, hence it is important to consult your dermatologist before undergoing any mole removal procedures.<\/p><h3>Post-removal care<\/h3><p>After your removal procedure, your dermatologist will give you detailed instructions on how to care for the surgical wound.
