What does helicopter parenting mean?<\/span><\/p>

\u2018Helicopter parent\u2019 refers to parents who keep \u201chovering over\u201d their children like a helicopter and constantly stay involved in their day-to-day affairs. The term came into mention in the late 60s, in the book \u2018Between Parent And Child\u2019, by the famous author, Haim Ginott.<\/span><\/p>

The term helicopter parenting is more commonly associated with the Asian parenting style where parents micromanage their children and handhold them at every step of their development.<\/span><\/p>

What makes us helicopter parents?<\/span><\/p>

– <\/b><\/span>Becoming a helicopter parent is not intentional. It stems from the <\/span>parent\u2019s desire for the child to achieve the best in life <\/span>in various aspects – be it education, mannerisms, or personality. As observed in Asian countries like Korea, Japan, China and India, parents stay deeply involved with the academic development of children and want them to be ahead in various fields.<\/span><\/p>

– Helicopter parenting is also associated with <\/span>parents\u2019 instincts of saving children from physical and emotional harm.<\/span> When we become too much concerned about their physical and social well-being we start policing them and being too involved in their relationships with the rest of the world. We also start monitoring them closely to see that they are physically fit and cut down their appetite for adventure.<\/span><\/p>

Parental support is no doubt crucial for the healthy growth of children, but excessive of everything is bad, and so is parental control.<\/span><\/p>
