When I first heard about the recent bullying case in a Singapore school, where a student allegedly issued death threats not only to the victim but also to their parents<\/strong>, I felt sick. As a parent, your mind immediately races: What if it was my child?<\/em><\/p>

Then the horror deepens \u2014 What if it was my child making the threats?<\/em><\/p>

This isn\u2019t just \u201ckids being kids.\u201d This is a terrifying sign that our school systems, parenting approaches, and community response to bullying<\/strong> are dangerously lacking.<\/p>

And it\u2019s time we talk about it.<\/p>

Bullying Isn\u2019t a Phase \u2014 It\u2019s a Psychological Crisis<\/h4>

A child who is bullied doesn\u2019t simply toughen up and move on. They are often left with deep psychological wounds \u2014 anxiety, depression, fear of going to school, and even suicidal ideation<\/strong>. Their academic performance deteriorates<\/strong>, social confidence disappears, and worst of all, they stop believing that adults can or will protect them.<\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

Socially, many bullied children begin to isolate themselves<\/strong>, feeling embarrassed or traumatised by repeated humiliation. They may grow up to distrust people, struggle with mental health, and lose out on their childhood.<\/p>

And what about the bully?<\/strong><\/h5>

A child who learns that intimidation, manipulation, and violence have no consequences will likely carry those behaviours into adulthood. These children are at higher risk of engaging in juvenile crime<\/strong>, delinquency, and abusive relationships.<\/p>

As the saying goes:
\u201cIf parents don\u2019t teach them, society will \u2014 and society is rarely kind.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

We do no one a favour by ignoring or excusing their actions. Early discipline is not punishment \u2014 it\u2019s prevention.<\/p>

Rough Play or Abuse? Schools Must Teach the Difference<\/h4>

Singapore schools often claim to have anti-bullying policies. But how many actually enforce them consistently and transparently<\/strong>? Many students can\u2019t even differentiate between rough play and emotional abuse<\/strong>, and sadly, some educators can’t either.<\/p>

The system is failing to clearly define \u2014 and enforce \u2014 boundaries. When schools minimise reported incidents, delay action, or avoid contacting parents, they not only endanger the victim \u2014 they embolden the bully.<\/p>

In this recent case, the school\u2019s slow and inadequate response reportedly forced the victim\u2019s parents to take matters into their own hands. That should never happen. When schools don\u2019t act, trust is broken<\/strong>, and victims are traumatised.<\/p>

Parents, We Cannot Be Complacent!<\/h4>

As Singaporean parents, we often place a lot of trust in our schools. We assume teachers will handle it, principals will investigate, and things will resolve. But that trust can quickly become complacency.<\/p>

When your child mentions being hurt \u2014 physically, verbally, or emotionally \u2014 don\u2019t dismiss it as drama. Don\u2019t advise them to \u201cjust ignore it.\u201d Follow up. Ask questions. Speak to teachers. Monitor changes in mood, appetite, or school performance.<\/strong> Most importantly, advocate for your child until the issue is resolved.<\/p>

Because the moment we stop listening, the silence becomes dangerous.<\/p>

Proactive Parenting Is a Child\u2019s Best Defence<\/h4>

We cannot shield our children from every harm, but we can equip them \u2014 with emotional resilience, confidence, and the assurance that they are not alone.<\/p>

We must work with schools, not against them \u2014 but we must also hold them accountable. Parent-school communication must go beyond termly meet-the-parent sessions.<\/strong> When there is a report of bullying, there must be clear timelines, escalation processes, and consequences.<\/p>

Child safety in Singapore starts with listening, believing, and acting. Let this case be a wake-up call<\/strong> \u2014 for schools to take bullying seriously, and for parents to stay involved, not only when things explode, but before they begin.<\/p>

Because when a child issues death threats, it’s not just a child in crisis \u2014 it\u2019s a system that has already failed them all.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
