Austin was asked to cover the shift, but couldn\u2019t because his pregnant wife, Lindsay, was due to give birth in three days and he had to take her to a doctor appointment. Austin was scheduled to work the following Friday and Saturday, but then his wife went into labor. He told his boss he would not be able to come in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub_buzz_desc\">\u201cThe second day I told my boss, \u2018My wife is still in labor,\u2019 and he just said, \u2018You\u2019re forcing my hand, if you aren\u2019t in work by 8:00 tomorrow we are going to terminate you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin decided that, no matter what, he would not miss the birth of his son.<br \/>\n\u201cI thought, \u2018Family comes before anything else,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to turn my back on them for a job.\u201d<br \/>\nOn New Year\u2019s Day, at 1a.m., Austin got a text message that his employment had been \u201cterminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub_buzz_desc\">\u201cI just responded \u2018ok,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI was in the hospital, it was a long night, and I wasn\u2019t trying to argue with nobody about a job while my wife was in labor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His son, Cainan, was born just a few hours later. I can\u2019t imagine having to choose between seeing your son born and keeping your job. If we\u2019re really going to do right by our working families, companies and governments need to step up to institute policies like paid family leave,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"superlist_4436150_10283921\" class=\"buzz_superlist_item buzz-superlist-item buzz_superlist_item_text buzz-superlist-item-text buzz_superlist_item_wide \">\n<div class=\"solid\">\nAustin has also received at least three job offers from people who read about his story. Denis Beaudoin, the business manager from Concord\u2019s International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, encouraged Austin to apply for an electrical work apprenticeship.<br \/>\n\u201cI know how valuable family time is, and if you\u2019re a union member we incorporate that, we understand that, and we don\u2019t penalize you for that,\u201d Beaudoin told the <i>Concord Monitor.<\/i><br \/>\nAustin was also offered an apprenticeship by a union president, and the branch manager of the Adecco staffing agency offered help finding work.<br \/>\n&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"superlist_4436150_10283939\" class=\"buzz_superlist_item buzz-superlist-item buzz_superlist_item_text buzz-superlist-item-text buzz_superlist_item_wide \">\n<div class=\"solid\">\nIn a statement to BuzzFeed News, a rep for Salerno Protective Services denied that Austin\u2019s termination had \u201canything to due with his child\u2019s birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub_buzz_desc\">The rep said he congratulated Austin and offered \u201creinstatement if he would agree to more training and put forth an effort to correct some things,\u201d but that Austin declined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timing of the termination was poor on my part but it was necessary for operation purposes,\u201d he said. \u201cSalerno will be looking into revamping it\u2019s termination policies to avoid such misunderstandings in the future.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"superlist_4436150_10283759\" class=\"buzz_superlist_item buzz-superlist-item buzz_superlist_item_text buzz-superlist-item-text buzz_superlist_item_wide \">\n<div class=\"solid\">\nThough losing his job hasn\u2019t been easy, Austin said it was worth it. \u201cIt was hard, but if I have to choose between work and family, I\u2019m always going to pick my family.
