His style epitomises the synthesis of elements from both Eastern and Western art traditions that is a hallmark of the Nanyang art style. Born in Yongchun, Fujian, he spent his early years in Muar, Malaya. In the 1920s, he studied in Shanghai’s nascent art schools, the Shanghai Academy of Art and Xinhua Art Academy. During his years in Paris, 1929-32, he was attracted to the modernist aesthetics of Post-Impressionism and Fauvism and sought to incorporate elements of their styles into his own work. In 1933, he joined the faculty of the Shanghai Art Academy teaching life drawing and oil painting. At the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in August 1937 he returned to Muar, expecting to be away a only few months. At the end of World War II, he moved to Singapore with his young family and played a major role in the arts community. He served as President of the Society of Artists 1946-57 and was a co-founder of the Singapore Art Society in 1949. In 2003, he donated over 1,000 paintings and sketches to the National Heritage Board.
