It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not interfere with hormones and works directly on hair follicles by lengthening the growing phase of the hair cycle and improving blood flow to the scalp.<\/span><\/p><p>Topical Minoxidil has a<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27225981\/\"> good efficacy profile[1]<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14996087\/\">multiple studies[2]<\/a>showing both increased patient reported clinically significant hair growth and an increase in hair counts within treatment areas. It also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27391639\/\">good safety profile[3]<\/a> as it is not systemically absorbed to a significant degree, with most side effects being related to skin irritation. As such, it is the initial drug of choice for FPHL.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are instances where female patients desire more results &#8211; in such cases, we can introduce oral anti-androgenic (anti-male hormone) medications. Some examples of these medications include Female Hormonal Acne Medication and Male Pattern Hair Loss Medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Male Pattern Hair Loss Medication, Female Hormonal Acne Medication&#8217;s list of side effects include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teratogenicity, postural giddiness, headaches and decreased libido. Due to these side effects, we look at their efficacy to decide if it\u2019s worth prescribing them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at them separately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female Hormonal Acne Medication and Male Pattern Hair Loss Medication &#8211; Worth It? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><p>Female Hormonal Acne Medication is <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9497885\/\">clinically[4]<\/a> the first choice for FPHL add on therapy. This is because it has strong clinical data that suggests benefit for female pattern hair loss. It also has a myriad of other uses including indications such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Hirsutism and Acne amongst many others. It does however have some unique side effects to monitor for, including electrolyte and creatinine changes which do have to be monitored upon treatment initiation for those at risk.<\/p><p><b>Male Pattern Hair Loss Medication\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> side effect profile is roughly similar to Female Hormonal Acne Medication, without the risk of electrolyte or creatinine changes. However, there are only a few studies which evaluate the efficacy of Male Pattern Hair Loss Medication in patients with FPHL. As such it is generally recommended to start on Male Pattern Hair Loss Medication <\/span><b>only if a patient is unable to tolerate Female Hormonal Acne Medication first.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Hair Loss Treatments for FPHL\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><p>If your hair loss is severe, you can also consider other hair treatments, including <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/slclinic.com.sg\/fue-hair-beard-eyebrow-transplant-cost-singapore\/\">hair transplants<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/slclinic.com.sg\/fotona-hair-growth-laser\/\">hair growth lasers<\/a> and hair micrograft transfers.
