We’ve all been there: you arrive home after a long day, juggling work, errands, and family, only to be greeted by a house that looks like a tornado swept through it. A mountain of laundry awaits, the sink is overflowing with dishes, and toys seem to have magically multiplied across the living room floor.

And the thought of tackling these chores after an exhausting day can be truly overwhelming.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a helping hand to restore order and bring back that sense of calm?

Hiring a part-time helper in Singapore might be just the solution you need, but with so many things to consider, where do you even begin?

Key Considerations When Hiring a Part-Time Helper

Say you’ve decided to hire a maid in Singapore, note that doing so isn’t as simple as popping into a shop and picking the first one that catches your eye. It’s a decision that involves careful planning and consideration, especially since you’ll likely be entering into a working agreement with another individual.

So, before you start your search, consider these key factors that will help you find the perfect match for your home.

1. Setting Your Budget

Before you head out to start finding a part-time helper, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of your financial commitments. After all, hiring a helper is an investment in your time and well-being, and you want to ensure it aligns with your budget.

Salary Expectations

When it comes to compensating your part-time helper, several factors come into play. Given that their experience, skills, and nationality can all influence the expected salary range, it’s helpful to research current market rates for part-time helpers in Singapore to get a sense of what’s competitive.

Refer to our part-time cleaner page for a general overview of the typical rate of hiring part-time maid services. Keep in mind that nationality can also be a factor in determining salary expectations, especially when hiring foreign domestic workers.

Additional Costs

Beyond the basic salary, remember to factor in additional expenses that might arise. These could include transportation allowances to cover their commute to and from your home when running errands, meal provisions and other potential costs like mobile phone credits or contributions to their health insurance. It’s essential to be aware of these potential extras to avoid any budget surprises down the line.

FDW Levy Concessions

If you’re considering hiring a foreign domestic worker (FDW) for your part-time help, it’s important to understand the FDW levy. This is a monthly fee that employers of FDWs in Singapore are required to pay to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). The current levy rate is S$300 per month for the first FDW and S$450 for subsequent ones.

However, there’s good news! You might be eligible for a concessionary levy, reducing the rate to S$60 per month. This applies if you live with a child under 16 years old, an elderly family member aged 67 or older, or a person with disabilities who requires assistance with daily living activities.

2. Defining Your Cleaning Needs

Once you’ve deciphered if hiring a part-time helper is within your budget, it’s time to delve into the specifics of what you actually need help with.

Do you need someone to tackle the weekly deep clean of your entire apartment, or are you mainly looking for assistance with specific tasks like laundry or ironing?

Consider how often you’d like the helper to come — is it a weekly visit, a bi-weekly arrangement, or perhaps something more frequent? Also, think about the duration of each cleaning session. Do you envision them working for a few hours or a full day?

Finally, take a moment to consider any specific preferences or priorities you might have. For example, do you need them to take care of your pets? Clearly outlining your expectations and communicating them to your potential helper will ensure a smoother and more efficient cleaning experience for both of you.

3. Qualities to Look for in a Part-Time Helper

"female

It’s also important to focus on the qualities that make a truly great part-time helper.

Attention to Detail

This might be a given, but a meticulous approach to cleaning can make all the difference! You want a helper who doesn’t just skim the surface but pays close attention to those often-overlooked details. They should be thorough, precise, and able to follow your instructions while maintaining high standards.

Strong Work Ethic

Reliability and a strong work ethic are essential traits in a part-time helper. You want someone who shows up on time, takes their responsibilities seriously, and is dedicated to completing the tasks at hand. A helper with a strong work ethic will go above and beyond to ensure your home is clean and tidy, taking initiative and tackling those extra tasks without needing constant reminders.

Eagerness to Learn and Adapt

A good part-time helper should also be open to learning new methods and adapting to your preferences. They should be open to your feedback, comfortable asking clarifying questions, and proactive in addressing any concerns that may arise. This adaptability will ensure they remain a valuable asset to your household, even as your needs and preferences evolve over time.

4. Conducting Background Checks

While it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of finding a helper who seems like a perfect fit, it’s crucial to take a step back and conduct thorough background checks as well. This might seem like an extra step, but it can save you from potential headaches and ensure peace of mind in the long run.

Verifying Employment History

Whether you’re working with an agency or hiring independently, verifying the information provided by the helper is essential. Don’t just take their word for it; take the initiative to confirm their employment history.

If you’re hiring a foreign domestic worker, the MOM website provides a handy tool for checking their employment records. All you will need is your Singpass details, as well as the FDW’s name, nationality, and date of birth. Alternatively, you can always get the employment agency to do a quick check for you.

Contacting Previous Employers

References can offer valuable insights into a helper’s work ethic, reliability, and overall character. Therefore, reach out to their previous employers and ask relevant questions. Were there any issues or concerns during their employment? Gathering this information can help ensure a harmonious working relationship with your new helper.

Selecting the Right Agency: Making an Informed Choice

If you’ve decided to go the agency route to find your part-time helper, choosing the right agency is just as important as finding the right helper. But how do you know which agency is the right fit for you?

Transparency in Policies and Pricing

A reputable agency will be upfront and clear about its fees, contract terms, and cancellation policies. They should readily provide you with all the necessary information and answer any questions you might have. Don’t hesitate to inquire about potential hidden fees or additional expenses that could arise during the hiring process. Open and honest communication from the start is a good indicator of a trustworthy agency.

Range of Services and Specialisations

Different agencies offer different services and specialise in various areas. Some might focus solely on providing helpers for basic cleaning tasks, while others might have a broader range of services, including spring cleaning services, cooking, or even pet care. Consider your needs and choose an agency that aligns with them. If you require specialised assistance beyond basic cleaning, ensure the agency has the experience and expertise to cater to those needs.

Online Presence and Reviews

A strong online presence is another good indicator of an agency’s credibility and professionalism. Check their website and social media for information about their services, values, and client testimonials. Look for agencies with positive feedback and a strong track record of client satisfaction.
