A 21\u00a0year-old Bangladeshi construction worker died in Singapore on Friday (Aug 4) after contracting diphtheria.<\/p>\n<h3><span><strong>What is Diphtheria?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by the\u00a0<em>Corynebacterium diphtheria<\/em>e bacterium. It is transmitted from person to person via the respiratory route through close contact (e.g. through air droplets from coughing or sneezing) with an affected case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Diphtheria can cause infection in a person\u2019s airways, which\u00a0may lead to breathing difficulties and death.<\/p>\n<p>Diphtheria is fatal in five to ten percent of cases, with a higher fatality rate in young children.<\/p>\n<h3><span><strong>How is Diphtheria spread?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Diphtheria is spread (transmitted) from person to person, usually through respiratory droplets, like from coughing or sneezing. Rarely, people can get sick from touching open sores (skin lesions) or or by close contact for example clothes or physical objects that have the bacteria on it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Information from:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diphtheria\/about\/causes-transmission.html\">https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diphtheria\/about\/causes-transmission.html<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span><strong>Can Diphtheria be treated?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Diphtheria can \u00a0be treated with a combination of medicine and antibiotics.
