His father had odd jobs, while he worked as a hawker assistant selling noodles from a pushcart in Tanjong Pagar. He was paid $1 a day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deciding that learning a trade was the way to go, he joined an electrical subcontracting firm in the early 1970s.
