As such, pneumothorax is the medical term for a collapsed lung that results in air finding its way into the pleural space (the space between the lungs and the chest cavity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Traumatic Pneumothorax<\/strong> can occur as a result of a traumatic incident such as impact from motor accidents or sports collisions, broken ribs, bullet or knife wound to the chest, medical procedures such as CPR or biopsies that may damage the lungs and changes in surrounding air pressures common with scuba diving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common form of pneumothorax that occurs without any cause is called a <strong>Spontaneous Pneumothorax. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This occurrence can be categorised into two specific events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (PSP): <\/strong>Occurs in young, adolescent, thin and tall teens with no history of lung disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secondary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (SSP): <\/strong>Occurs in older people with known lung problems from conditions such as lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of Pneumothorax<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening. Mild cases of pneumothorax may go unnoticed. Common symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chest Pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coughing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast Breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rapid Heartbeat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investigation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"ff77c1\" class=\"section-ff77c1 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"fbafe1\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-fbafe1 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-ff77c1\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">X-Ray<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g8fc08d\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g8fc08d gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">This is the most common method used to achieve a diagnosis. It will also tell the doctor the extent and severity of the condition.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"786660\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-786660 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-ff77c1\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">CT Scan<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g46cf32\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g46cf32 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">To assess for any underlying lung conditions the patient may be experiencing. It also helps to assess the condition of the opposite lung of patients who do.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"6ede67\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-6ede67 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-ff77c1\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">Ultrasound<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-ff77c1 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g2d88eb\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g2d88eb gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Used to assess the severity of the condition and to aid in insertion of chest tube during treatment.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatments<a role=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.icts.com.sg\/contact-us\/\"><br><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"c2af73\" class=\"section-c2af73 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"4c10ed\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-4c10ed gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-c2af73\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">Conservative Approach<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g3ccfbf\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g3ccfbf gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">For those with minor cases of PSPs, the surgeon may suggest monitoring the condition closely. It would usually resolve within the first 24-48 hours. In some cases, patients may experience a drop in oxygen levels in the lungs known as hypoxia. This will be treated with nasal oxygen supplementation.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"94d43f\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-94d43f gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-c2af73\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">Thoracostomy (Chest Tube Insertion)<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-gf9ec85\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-gf9ec85 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">A hollowed needle is carefully inserted into the pleural cavity following by the insertion of a chest tube to allow the air to drain and the lung to re-inflate to heal.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"3bd742\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-3bd742 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-c2af73\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">Surgery<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-c2af73 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g7bb2e0\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g7bb2e0 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">If a patient has experienced more than one incident of spontaneous pneumothorax or if there is a large amount of air trapped within the pleural cavity, not allowing the lungs to re-expand, surgery would be recommended. Rarely, some occupations and lifestyles become an indication for surgery.<br><br>The surgery is performed through Video-Assisted Surgery involving 2-3 keyhole incisions which also involves doing a bullectomy and Pleurodesis [fusion of pleura] so that the pneumothorax doesn\u2019t recur.
