These along with other muscles and tissues form the Chest Wall which protects the vital organs that resides within the thoracic cavity such as the lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bones that enclose the thoracic cavity are rigid and strong but at the same time flexible to allow movement associated with breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tumours that form in the chest wall are highly uncommon but when they do occur, can present as a challenging problem to diagnose and manage. The tumour can either be benign (non-cancerous and does not spread to the rest of the body) or malignant (cancerous and will spread to the rest of the body). As both these tumours are very similar, it is very challenging to differentiate between the two. The source of origin of the tumour can also be difficult to pinpoint as there is a wide variety of muscle, bone and tissue within the chest wall that it could have possibly originated from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abnormalities in the ribs can also manifest as chest wall tumours, painful fracture, as a bleeding point into the thoracic cavity or just an incidental finding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symptoms of tumours in the chest wall or rib abnormalities are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Asymptomatic lesions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Painless Swelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incidental finding when screening for other Lesions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscle Atrophy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impaired movement of the Chest wall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investigation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"240cb3\" class=\"section-240cb3 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"43d461\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-43d461 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-240cb3\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">Chest X-Ray<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g8bd5d7\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g8bd5d7 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">This is used as the initial tool for screening to determine if there are any abnormalities present in the chest wall and the rib cages.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"d608cf\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-d608cf gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-240cb3\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">CT Scan<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g8e2b32\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g8e2b32 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">This is a more in-depth imaging test used to diagnose a chest tumour. It allows the doctor to diagnose the size of the tumour, how active the tumour is and where the point of origin of the tumour is.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"3c498a\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-3c498a gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-240cb3\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">CT Scan With 3D Reconstruction<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g1c39e9\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g1c39e9 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">This test is used to measure the depth and extent of the tumour, the areas which require surgery along with how the doctor can restore damaged tissues using alternative materials.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"5ec858\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-5ec858 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-240cb3\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">MRI Scan<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g080ed7\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g080ed7 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">The MRI Scan allows the surgeon to diagnose the extent of the tumour growth. As a tumour grows it begins to invade into muscular tissues. It also allows for the amount of nervous system involvement with the tumour to be diagnosed as the tumour may begin to invade the nerves, neurovascular bundle and spinal column.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"2c5522\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-2c5522 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-240cb3\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">PET CT Scan<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-240cb3 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g547890\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g547890 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">This is a biological test that allows for the degree of tumour spread to be assessed. It can also assess if there is any disease elsewhere in the body. It can also be used to determine the probability of recurrence.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"d09333\" class=\"section-d09333 gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"80d75b\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m6-item section-80d75b gutentor-module gutentor-module-accordion-item\"><div class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel g-a-panel-d09333\"><div tabindex=\"0\" class=\"gm-ah-d09333 gutentor-module-accordion-item-heading gutentor-module-icon-position-right\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-panel-handler-label\">Surgery For Rib Abnormalities<\/span><span class=\"gutentor-module-accordion-icon\"><i class=\"gm-aio-d09333 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-open fas fa-plus\"><\/i><i class=\"gm-aic-d09333 gutentor-module-accordion-icon-close fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"gm-ab-d09333 gutentor-module-accordion-body\">\n<div id=\"section-g5e514c\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e0 section-g5e514c gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">The most common rib abnormalities are rib fractures with or without Flail Segments. A Flail Segment is the conditions in which a segment of the rib cage breaks in two junctions on the same rib making its part ineffective in respiration and may become detached from the rest of the chest wall.<br>At ICTS, we combat this problem by fixing pre-contoured rib plates onto the ribs. Surgical resection is the removal of the targeted tissue. However, they may also require resection of the associated muscles nerves and blood vessels. After surgical resection, they will require reconstruction. Here at our centre, we are pioneers in reconstruction having done the world\u2019s first 3D printed non-metallic implant. After the reconstruction, the patient\u2019s respiratory dynamics should improve more quickly.
