Making Space is a gathering of moments across the past 20 years of Objectifs. The showcase charts our evolution in size and spirit, reflecting on the ways we have grown in community and verve, and how we have been shaped by the unique conditions of the Singapore arts scene and wider trends. As an independent visual arts centre focused on photography and film, Objectifs has made room for image-based art to traverse boundaries of form and function, while encouraging conversations about the manifold ways in which stories, issues, and artistic expression can bring us together.<\/p>

In marking our 20th anniversary, we pay homage to the people and events that have made Objectifs possible. It is a tribute to the past and a celebration of the present, in anticipation of the future. It is an attempt to learn together, connect with each other, and enable more inclusive and diverse ways of telling stories and building communities through the power of the image. In this performance artwork, artist\u00a0John Clang<\/strong>\u00a0embodies his search for meaning, purpose and identity by adopting the technique of zi wei dou shu (\u7d2b\u5fae\u6597\u6570), a metaphysical philosophy dating back to imperial China, to forecast events in the life of invited participants and illuminate insights to challenges. Integrating knowledge from geomancy to Chinese medicine and elements, the approach involves computing charts based on one\u2019s birth timing to intuit interrelationships between various core \u201cpalaces\u201d of life such as health, kinship and career. The readings, conducted in hour-long durations, welcome anyone and everyone seeking advice. Reflecting on dual roles of an artist and visionary in triangulating causality, necessity and possibility, the artwork contemplates on critical junctures where art ceases and life begins. Of Weeping Trees<\/em>\u00a0is a solo exhibition by Marvin Tang<\/a> examines the parallel narratives of Hevea brasiliensis, also known as the Para Rubber Tree, and plantation labourers, whose fates became entwined upon their arrival in Singapore in the 1900s. Through colonial postcards, contemporary surveys of former and existing rubber plantations, and the songs sung by these labourers, the exhibition unfolds connections forged over the contested ground of history, economy and ecology.\u00a0<\/p>

This is the conclusion to the first chapter of The Colony,<\/i> which focuses on Singapore\u2019s early relationship with the botanical empire via the movement of the Hevea brasiliensis. The Colony<\/em> is the artist\u2019s long-term research project on the impact of botanical institutes on the movement of seeds, plants and people in the colonial era.<\/p>

Waterloo Street Stories<\/em> is a collaborative project by the #WaterlooStKakis for Singapore Night Festival 2023, to spotlight the dynamic and textured stories that make this street unique. At the heart of Waterloo Street Stories<\/em> is a rich narrative of one of the main thoroughfares of the Bras Basah Bugis district, illustrated through movement, audio plays, music and photographs that responds to the oral histories of different Waterloo Street personalities.<\/p>

Stretching from Rochor Road to Bras Basah Road, Waterloo Street is home to a diverse mix of communities, as well as religious, arts, food, and lifestyle organisations. This mix includes Centre 42, Objectifs, P7:1SMA, SMU-ACM<\/strong> (Arts and Culture Management Programme at Singapore Management University), and The Theatre Practice<\/strong>, who each have been building their own artistic and educational communities on this street.<\/p>

We present an outdoor photography exhibition by <\/span>Marc Chu, Muhammad Zulfadhli, Pek Yan Lin<\/strong>, and <\/span>Sarah Lee, <\/strong>who have documented 18 individuals who live and work around the neighbourhood. <\/span>During SNF, visitors can also sign up for guided shoots led by these photographers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Being with Water<\/em>\u00a0is a photographic work that explores the interconnectedness between our interior worlds and the elemental. It features unique silver gelatin prints suggestive of landscapes, dusk, and dawn, visually alluding to renewal and transformation, beginnings and endings, hope and loss \u2013 universal experiences as we navigate life. To create these prints, artist\u00a0Ng Hui Hsien<\/strong>\u00a0bypasses the camera and works directly and primarily with water, light, and photographic materials. For her, this hands-on analogue process is her attempt to better understand \u2013 and learn from \u2013 the characteristics of natural elements, especially water. In a way hence, Being with Water also invites us to see ourselves and draw lessons from the natural world around us. Walter Benjamin was a German-Jewish writer and philosopher whose influential work on art, history, modernity, and capitalism has become a protean and prophetic lens for our collective past, present and future. Key themes that animate Walter Benjamin\u2019s well-known writings can be appreciated in Southeast Asian filmmaking. The Objectifs Film Club x Walter Benjamin Reading Group<\/b> is a space for re-reading Benjamin\u2019s work through Southeast Asian films about cultural memory, collective pasts and futures, post-colonialism legacies, and affect in an age of information overload.<\/p>\n

The word \u2018renewal\u2019 is seldom distant from the collective Singaporean consciousness. Bringing to mind the age-old national narrative of constant progress and development, where our skills and environment are forever subjected to upgrading, the beginning of each new year also encloses the word within a more personal sphere as we contemplate changes to old habits and come up with new year resolutions.<\/p>

In this Film Club session, we feature a screening of\u00a0Tenebrae by Nicole Midori Woodford<\/b>.<\/a>\u00a0Gollowed by a conversation between the filmmaker herself and Singaporean poet,\u00a0Crispin Rodrigues<\/b><\/a>, who will be reading a poem in tandem with the screening. rub rub <\/i>is Atelier HOKO\u2019<\/b>s response to the site of 155 Middle Road. The work comprises a series of charcoal rubbings made on and around Objectifs, created over several months. Much like the process of image-making, the technique of rubbing, or frottage, can create visual, indexical impressions. However in rub rub, frottage reveals new ways of looking at ordinary materials, textures and objects, while concealing their original form through abstraction. By introducing these rubbings into the Objectifs store, Atelier HOKO invites viewers to speculate on the origin of these impressions, and by extension, encourage a greater curiosity in the everyday. Independent research lab Atelier HOKO is founded by Alvin Ho and Clara Koh.\u00a0<\/p>

This work is a site-specific installation at the Objectifs store, as a part of Site Unseen \u2014 an adapted studio residency programme by Objectifs that invites artists and image makers to create site-specific image-based works for spaces outside of a conventional gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour large-format publication of the same title; both exhibition and book commemorate the remarkable life and photographic practice of Cultural Medallion awardee Chua Soo Bin, bringing to the fore his personal and professional experiences as well as life philosophies that have been honed through the years.<\/span><\/p>

The show offers highlights from every significant phase of Soo Bin\u2019s practice \u2013 with photographs of the 1950s and 60s when he was actively involved with salon photography; to the advertising and professional photographic campaigns of the 1970s-1980s in his ascent as one of Singapore\u2019s award-winning photographers; his magnum opus (1984-88), the Legends<\/i> suite of photographs of 14 Chinese ink masters including Singapore\u2019s Dr. Chen Wen Hsi; his emergence as a gallerist-dealer of foresight and vision in the 1990s, and his continuing creative work that includes photographs of Singapore artists Liu Kang, Wu Tsai Yen, Chua Ek Kay, Chng Seok Tin and Lee Wen.<\/p>

Bad Clocks: Alley Through a Pinhole<\/em> is a site-specific and immersive installation that introduces a camera obscura into the Lower Gallery of Objectifs. By creating a pinhole in a darkened room, the environment surrounding the gallery projects back into its interiors, blending indoor and outdoor spaces with light.<\/p>

Bad Clocks <\/i>is an ongoing concept explored by DASSAD<\/strong> to reconsider the ways we understand and define time. This iteration explores the perception of time within the camera obscura, tracing back to the beginnings of photography. The camera obscura becomes a playground for interdisciplinary collaborations, inspiring visual, sound, performance and installation-based works concerned about the passing of time.
