Should you create more of whatever generated those impressions?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is: <b>you cannot tell from those four numbers alone.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that may be the most important thing marketers need to understand about Google Search Console&#8217;s Platform Properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google now allows verified owners of Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X accounts to see how their content performs across Google Search, Discover and Google News. The reports can show which posts receive visibility and clicks, and what queries people use to discover them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But more data does not automatically mean more insight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opportunity is learning how to connect this new search data with the social and business metrics marketers already have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because <b>11,600 impressions tell you that your content appeared. Views. Likes. Comments. Shares. Saves. Watch time. Followers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Search Console should not simply become another column in that report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It answers a different question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native social analytics tell you what happened to content <b>within the social platform<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Platform Properties show how that content is being discovered <b>through Google<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Search Engine Land&#8217;s Barry Schwartz highlighted one of the practical changes when Platform Properties became globally available: marketers can now access Google performance data for content hosted on third-party platforms they do not own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means a social post now has at least two measurable environments:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Feed Performance:<\/b> How did the content perform when the social platform distributed it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Search Performance:<\/b> How did the content perform when Google surfaced it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those results may look very different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-post-can-look-average-on-social-and-still-earn-search-visibility\"><b>A Post Can Look Average on Social and Still Earn Search Visibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider two hypothetical Instagram posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Post A<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50,000 Instagram views<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,000 likes<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very little visibility from Google<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Post B<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8,000 Instagram views<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which performed better?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We cannot say from those numbers alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post A appears stronger at generating reach and engagement within Instagram.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post B has greater visibility through Google Search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither dataset tells us which contributed more to the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So instead of forcing every post into a single definition of &#8220;good&#8221;, evaluate it according to <b>the job it is doing and the environment in which it is performing<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is where Search Console becomes useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"start-with-the-query-not-the-click\"><b>Start With the Query, Not the Click<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go back to our example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>11,600 impressions.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>48 clicks.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>0.4% CTR.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Average position: 11.5.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is tempting to focus immediately on the 48 clicks or 0.4% CTR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We would start somewhere else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Queries.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full In this example, the impressions come from a mixture of branded searches and broader searches related to the services OOm provides.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google confirms that Platform Properties can show the search queries people use to discover a social profile and its content. Google also recommends analysing these queries to understand audience interests and inform future content decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So do not just ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How many impressions did we get?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>What did we earn those impressions for?<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is where the analysis starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"not-all-search-impressions-mean-the-same-thing\"><b>Not All Search Impressions Mean the Same Thing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A useful first step is to separate the queries according to what they reveal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Branded Discovery<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine your Instagram profile appears for:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201coom singapore\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know your social presence appeared when somebody searched for your brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not know what originally created that demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person could have encountered the brand through an advertisement, recommendation, event, website or another source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the defensible conclusion is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Our Instagram presence is visible for searches relating to our brand.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Useful information, but not attribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Non-Branded Discovery<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cdigital marketing agency 400;\">If your social content appears for it, you have evidence that the content is receiving Google visibility for a commercially relevant topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span 400;\">or<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201chow to improve google rankings\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These queries reveal something beyond performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They reveal <b>questions<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And questions can become content opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google recommends using the search terms that lead people to social content to inform future videos, captions and content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means the Queries report can become more than a performance report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>It can become an input into your content strategy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"so-are-11-600-impressions-good\"><b>So, Are 11,600 Impressions Good?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img across relevant non-branded and informational searches relating to its products and services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The headline metric is identical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What the metric represents is not.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why we would not evaluate Platform Properties based on impression growth alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, OOm recommends looking at what we call:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Relevant Search Visibility<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relevant Search Visibility is not a Google metric or a validated scoring model. It is a practical method OOm can refine as more Platform Properties data becomes available. To apply it, classify each query as branded, commercial non-branded, informational or irrelevant. Then assess whether the query matches the post, relates to a customer problem and connects to something the business offers.
