With it, you measure your organisation\u2019s ability to begin a project and identify areas that need more attention before the project commences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Much of the usefulness of an Industry 4.0 readiness assessment is represented by a simple question: Is your manufacturing business ready to generate business value by using Industry 4.0 technologies and practices?<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">By comparing manufacturing capabilities, resources, and experience against a set of industry-wide benchmark values. With this guidance, high-level business goals, and performance standards (KPIs), manufacturers can identify and prioritise Industry 4.0 investments and development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">An Industry 4.0 readiness assessment describes a company\u2019s preparedness to undergo a significant change or take on new capabilities, products, or business models. It\u2019s also an audit process that uses checklists of resources and capabilities. Assessment criteria are based on the current situation at a manufacturing company. For example, an important indicator of Industry 4.0 development success is a company\u2019s willingness to alter its current manufacturing, business, and training practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">By enforcing the first-things-first approach to Industry 4.0 development, assessment results become a useful tool that can be checked and rechecked as Industry 4.0 investments change and grow. In addition, readiness assessments enforce other helpful disciplines. Measuring company capabilities throughout the supply chain and product life cycle makes it easier for process engineers and business leaders to identify and respond to changes. They are provided with a big picture perspective of their operations and business practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Below are three examples of the Industry 4.0 readiness assessment framework:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"reader-text-block__heading2\"><strong>IMPULS Industry 4.0 Readiness Assessment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">In 2015, project partners from the Cologne Institute for Economic Research and the Institute for Industrial Management at Aachen University in Germany developed an online tool. Interested manufacturing and engineering companies could measure their individual Industry 4.0 readiness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The study that created the assessment was designed to bring the grand vision of Industry 4.0 down to earth. But, then, there was a need to bridge Industry 4.0 vision and day-to-day business reality. So the useful assessment should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Highlight the obstacles and challenges that manufacturers must face during their digital manufacturing development efforts.<\/li>\n<li class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Document the resources and capabilities of mechanical and plant engineering companies before Industry 4.0 development begins.<\/li>\n<li class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Focus on what motivates engineers to change their practices and what holds them back.<\/li>\n<li class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Highlight the different assessment results that occur at SMEs and larger companies.<\/li>\n<li class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Provide engineers and manufacturers with a detailed, systematic framework of <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.precicon.com.sg\/industry-4-0\/\">Industry 4.0<\/a> concepts, capabilities, and maturity criteria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Industrie 4.0 Readiness tool enables users to measure the maturity of their information and operations technology and their management and business practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The framework arranges these sub-dimensions along a spectrum of capabilities, measuring a company\u2019s technology and business maturity. Below figure is an example taken from the Employees dimension of the Industrie 4.0 Readiness study:<\/p>\n<div class=\"reader-image-block reader-image-block--full-width\">\n<div class=\"ivm-image-view-model \">\n<div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper--use-img-tag display-flex \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"ember3760\" class=\"ivm-view-attr__img--centered reader-image-block__img lazy-image ember-view aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media-exp1.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/C5612AQEORJpU2VOiEA\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/0\/1648603078996?e=2147483647&amp;v=beta&amp;t=6siI7Q63zBkiYfmLDB4JLnfoDoEO_rQf67eAYtaa43M\" alt=\"Industry 4.0 readiness levels in the dimension of employees\" width=\"503\" height=\"329\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Readiness levels in the dimension of employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The figure above figure provides the actual survey results of the 2015 study and detailed criteria for each level in the study\u2019s Employees dimension. The percentages of survey respondents that operate at various readiness levels are indicated in the chevrons on the left side of the image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__heading2\">\n<h2 class=\"reader-text-block__heading2\"><strong>Warwick University Readiness Assessment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) is a department of the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. In 2017, WMG students and faculty joined forces with the global management company, Crimson &amp; Co and international law firm Pinsent Masons. The group\u2019s Industry 4.0 readiness assessment was a product of this collaboration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">By working with industry and private sector partners, WMG team members added academic discipline to the identification, and possible solution, of a complex business problem \u2014 describing the Industry 4.0 readiness of UK manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Similar to the Industrie 4.0 Readiness study, the WMG assessment process reviewed the capabilities that enable manufacturers to generate value via Industry 4.0 technologies, ideas, and methods. In the German study, the UK authors used gap analysis and an <a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.precicon.com.sg\/industry-4-0\/\">Industry 4.0<\/a> maturity framework to help businesses identify their progress and needed improvements. A survey-based study provided the data required to build a self-assessment tool in both cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Major concepts and their relationships \u2014 Unlike the Industrie 4.0 readiness study, the WMG team created a model that emphasised supply chain strategy as a driver of business transformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">This approach led to a framework of six dimensions and 34 sub-dimensions, which the study calls fields. Table below presents the framework and its topics in tabular form.<\/p>\n<div class=\"reader-image-block reader-image-block--full-width\">\n<div class=\"ivm-image-view-model \">\n<div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper--use-img-tag display-flex \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"ember3761\" class=\"ivm-view-attr__img--centered reader-image-block__img lazy-image ember-view aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media-exp1.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/C5612AQH8SoP7vI0jaQ\/article-inline_image-shrink_1000_1488\/0\/1648603294016?e=2147483647&amp;v=beta&amp;t=pXMBbTiWI-5u-QwCxuBOrrVPkcb1CHdXEzFrtk3os_o\" alt=\"Singapore Smart Industry Readiness Index\" width=\"526\" height=\"620\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper--use-img-tag display-flex \" style=\"text-align: center;\">Table: University of Warwick Readiness Assessment<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__heading2\">\n<h2 class=\"reader-text-block__heading2\"><strong>Singapore Smart Industry Readiness Index<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Launched in November 2017, the Singapore Smart Industry Readiness Index (SSIRI) results from the collaboration between national government agencies and private sector members. The country\u2019s Economic Development Board appointed T\u00dcV S\u00dcD, an inspection, certification, and training company, to work with them to develop a comprehensive but easy-to-use self-assessment tool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The SSIRI tool is designed especially for manufacturing companies in Singapore. From the beginning of the index\u2019s development, the goal was to design, build, test, and share a comprehensive tool for companies of all sizes and manufacturing industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Together, the agency specialists and consultants created a working model of the SSIRI. They also selected 300 multinational companies and SMEs in Singapore for training and assistance in using the index. The goal: is to help Singapore\u2019s manufacturers understand their Industry 4.0 status and develop a roadmap to improve their readiness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The results of this 300-company pilot provide benchmark metrics for other manufacturers who want to improve their operations in different assessment areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Source materials and main ideas \u2014 Index source materials included industry reports, landscape studies, business surveys, and models produced by leading European professional associations and players in the Singaporean manufacturing industry. The index draws on the Reference Architectural Model for Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) developed by Platform Industrie 4.0, one of the world\u2019s largest Industry 4.0 networks. Industry 4.0 technology adoption aims to reduce costs and time to market by connecting intelligent facilities with every part of the production value chain. Opportunities for process improvements occur throughout:<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Manufacturing operations<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Using Industry 4.0 technologies and practices enables manufacturers to achieve their long-time goal: to create the best quality goods possible for the lowest possible cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The supply chain<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 In Industry 4.0 environments, it\u2019s possible to improve manufacturing and business processes from raw material points of origin to the ultimate consumer. This expanded range of processes benefits all players throughout the value chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The product life cycle<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s possible to make processes more efficient in each of the stages that every product goes through, from the earliest design stage to manufacture, use, and eventual removal from the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">From product design studios to the factory floor and many stages of logistics, the wide-ranging changes in Industry 4.0 environments require a high degree of automation, intelligence, and connectivity. That\u2019s where new technologies come into play.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>The Technology building blocks<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 New technologies and new use cases for familiar ones\u2014are essential in transforming manufacturing processes. Manufacturers rely on technology to provide three basic capabilities throughout their Industry 4.0 systems. These include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Connectivity<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 measures the state of connectedness between equipment, machines, cyber-physical systems, and humans. As each year passes, more wired analogue devices are converted to wireless, digital ones. It\u2019s the digital, internet-enabled devices that are put to work in smart factories and their offices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Intelligence<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the ability of advanced data management technology to enable high-speed, high-volume data analysis. Intelligence enables responsive, data-driven decision making, the foundation of efficient manufacturing operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Automation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the ability of technology to monitor, control, and execute the production processes and delivery of products and services, with little or no human intervention. Intelligent automation, a hallmark of Industry 4.0, enables swift responses to change in technology and business environments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Including humans in systems that consist primarily of technology and all manner of hardware is characteristic of Industry 4.0. Human organisations and management practices share a vital role in digital transformation.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>The organisation building block<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 It\u2019s possible to measure Industry 4.0 readiness regarding how highly developed organisational and management practices in a manufacturing company might be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Organisational criteria include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Talent Readiness<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Developing the skills and knowledge needed to operate smart factories and their supporting business processes has constantly challenged Industry 4.0 adopters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Structure and management<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Structural criteria measure whether a company has a system of rules and policies that guide how roles and responsibilities are assigned, controlled, and coordinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Manufacturers have several choices to develop the required skills: formal education and training, internal training programs, or ad hoc on-the-job training. Success depends mainly on a company-wide commitment to continuous training and self-education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">The integration of People, Processes and Technology will be the key success factor that enables the manufacturing enterprise to achieve its never-ending Smart Manufacturing vision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a Readiness Assessment?
