(See Annex for full details.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The establishment of Singapore Youth Theatre means that Wild Rice now offers a comprehensive theatre education programme to nurture artists from the ages of 5 to 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young talents can grow with the company, all the way from its initiatives for children (First Stage and Wild Rice Academy), through to Singapore Youth Theatre and Young &amp; Wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe theatre is the perfect training ground for young people \u2013 it\u2019s a place where they can learn who they are and who they want to be, figure out what they believe in, and start to tell the stories the world needs to hear,\u201d says Ivan Heng, Founding Artistic Director of Wild Rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re incredibly proud to have offered a home to these young artists, who we know will be making waves in Singapore\u2019s theatre community for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Singapore Youth Theatre Forges Its Own Path With New Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the beginning of the year, Wild Rice\u2019s inaugural <strong>Singapore Youth Theatre<\/strong> ensemble \u2013 comprising 12 young theatre-makers from the ages of 13 to 17 \u2013 have been hard at work creating their own original show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past year, they have worked with acclaimed playwright and director Thomas Lim to learn how to write, improvise and perform their own short plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is <strong><em>Schooled<\/em><\/strong>, a devised play inspired by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg\u2019s speech at the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit \u2013 where she boldly told world leaders, \u201cYou are failing us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were inspired by this to create a play in which adults are sent back to school to learn lessons taught by young people,\u201d explains Lim, who is also Wild Rice\u2019s Associate Artistic Director for Youth &amp; Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The play \u2013 with its conscious focus on what the young artists themselves want to say \u2013 reflects Wild Rice\u2019s goal in launching the Singapore Youth Theatre programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are very few theatre-making platforms available for young people to express themselves and voice their concerns,\u201d Lim says. \u201cWhen you give them the keys and put them behind the wheel, you\u2019ll be surprised where they take you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Young &amp; Abul Yusof<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the 16 members of <strong>Young &amp; Wild<\/strong> \u2013 the sixth cohort of Wild Rice\u2019s acclaimed youth division \u2013 have been honing their skills and learning their craft from some of Singapore\u2019s top professional theatre-makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December, they will be graduating with a thrilling, bold production of <strong><em>Candide <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Mark Ravenhill\u2019s modern update of Voltaire\u2019s classic novel centred on a relentlessly upbeat protagonist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Candide <\/em>is a pitch-perfect play for our times \u2013 one that questions the value of optimism just as we are living through one of the darkest, most turbulent moments in human history,\u201d notes Edith Podesta, Wild Rice\u2019s Associate Artistic Director for Young &amp; Wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking on <em>Candide<\/em> has challenged us all to think about what we can do, and how we can survive, when everything around us seems to be going badly wrong. It\u2019s a lesson I think we can all \u2013 artists and audiences alike \u2013 afford to learn right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podesta, one of Singapore\u2019s leading drama educators, is excited to see what her students in Young &amp; Wild will do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the past year, we have challenged, inspired and educated these gifted young artists \u2013 and they\u2019ve done the
