Do you have a ritual as a performer?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Stressing about the performance was a ritual. In recent years, I\u2019ve learned to let that go and \u201cclear my mind\u201d. In essence, try and trick the mind into \u201cforgetting\u201d that you\u2019re going to have to step onto stage and perform this character in front of hundreds in T-minus one minute. I learned that from Lim Yu Beng!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What keeps you up at night?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Tinkering with my PC. Doesn\u2019t help with the eye bags or 10am rehearsal call times!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re throwing a dinner party for five guests \u2013 dead or alive, real or fictional. Whom would you invite?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Jerry Seinfeld, Seth Rogen, H.G Wells, Ann Kok and my mum!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s one of your pet peeves?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

People who cut into queues and steal cabs. I know those are two pet peeves but it\u2019s the same revulsion, see? The words and revenge fantasy dramas that play in my head when I see those things happen are\u2026 unprintable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you were entertaining a visitor from overseas, what\u2019s the one place in Singapore you\u2019d take them to?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If they could only visit just one place\u2026 I guess it would be my home. I seldom have guests, so it would mean I really treasured them. I\u2019m as Singaporean as can be, no need to shuttle them to a place that has been designated as a representation of Singapore. I\u2019ll represent my country myself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s one thing you\u2019ve done in the past year that you\u2019ve never done before?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I recently got a chance to both direct a play and act in one in the same month with young & W!LD\u2019s The Bald Soprano<\/em> and Boeing Boeing<\/em>! Achievement unlocked!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us about the theatrical experience that changed your life.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The one time I got to work with the late, great Krishen Jit for a production of Prelude to a Kiss<\/em> around 2004 was both pivotal and formative. As a director, he was your saviour and collaborator, as well as your tormenter. The lessons I took from that have been unfolding and revealing themselves for years, as I gained experience and, well, hindsight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you could import something that you can\u2019t get in Singapore, what would it be?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Mmmmm\u2026. That\u2019s a tough one. I want to say an Airsoft rifle because (a) It\u2019s banned here! (b) I\u2019ve always wanted one! (C\u2019mon, Singapore customs! It\u2019s a TOY!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a very close second would be, perhaps, the Japanese people\u2019s social graces and public-mindedness, given that Singapore can sometimes be a cosmopolitan centre of very un-urbane rudeness and entitlement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
