All of 10 years old, Chloe Choo is no stranger to the stage. You may have spotted her as one of our FIRST STAGE K!DS in last year\u2019s The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes<\/em>. Later this month, she\u2019ll be treading the boards once again for W!LD RICE\u2019s upcoming pantomime, Monkey Goes West<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love to entertain people,\u201d she tells us about her passion for performing. \u201cI like that I can show everyone what I can do!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what Chloe can do is impressive. She has sung, danced and acted alongside professional actors, playing featured roles in classic musicals such as Annie<\/em> and The Sound of Music<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What she can\u2019t<\/em> do is choose between singing, dancing and acting. \u201cI love all of it,\u201d she says cheerfully. \u201cThey call musical theatre performers \u2018triple threats\u2019 \u2013 which involves doing all three at once \u2013 and that\u2019s what I want to be!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chloe credits her mother, Maria, with introducing her to the theatre. \u201cI didn\u2019t really feel much excitement about it,\u201d she confesses about her initial reluctance to audition for Annie<\/em> when she was six years old. Fortunately, she changed her mind and decided that she should try something new. The rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m performing, I feel so alive and so free,\u201d she enthuses. \u201cI get nervous and a bit scared backstage, but once I go on stage, I forget about everything else. I just think about staying in character and having fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most actors have a tale or two to share about on-stage mishaps, and Chloe is no different. She recalls a moment in a 2014 production of The Sound of Music<\/em>, in which she played Gretl, the youngest daughter of the Von Trapp family. As she was walking off-stage, someone accidentally stepped on her shoe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI went off with only one shoe on!\u201d she laughs. \u201cThey had to find a way to get it back.\u201d Everything turned out well, of course \u2013 thanks to some quick thinking on the part of her stage father, who salvaged the shoe and placed it safely on a table to be brought off-stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As much as she likes the limelight, Chloe has gained a deep appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes. She has come to understand just how much unseen work goes into creating any theatre production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI enjoy the whole process,\u201d she says. \u201cAs a performer, I\u2019ve learnt that you have to be disciplined, prepared and punctual. You have to learn your lines, and really get to know your characters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Chloe, one of the perks of working in theatre is meeting new people. \u201cI love making new friends!\u201d she declares happily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being a part of W!LD RICE\u2019s FIRST STAGE Programme means that she\u2019s had the opportunity to catch up with old friends too. Last year, she formed a \u2018Lepak Crew\u2019 with\u00a0Nadim Sazwan, Rizq Anaqi<\/a>\u00a0and Sarah Syazlina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, they have all been reunited for Monkey Goes West<\/em>. Over the past few weeks, Chloe has been in rehearsals, learning brand-new dance moves and watching the adult cast members in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pantomime has also given Chloe the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the top talents in Singapore\u2019s theatre industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include Auntie Pam Oei, her \u201cfun, cool\u201d director for The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes<\/em>; and Uncle Ivan Heng \u2013 without whom, she declares, \u201cthere is no W!LD RICE at all!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has been an incredible learning journey,\u201d she adds. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to everyone who has helped me to improve as a performer!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly, she loves being in the W!LD RICE pantomime because of the spotlight it shines on the children on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
