This year, WILD RICE produced all eight shows that dazzled and delighted audiences over three weeks at LASALLE College of the Arts. Each show was a celebration of new voices and original writing \u2013 telling the stories that matter, the stories that need to be told, the stories that make us who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>\u201cWILD RICE&#8217;s festival, which has been through five editions since 2006, is one of the high points of Singapore&#8217;s arts calendar for me. Over the past 12 years, this festival has offered me some of the most engaging, inspirational, infuriating and frustrating theatre experiences I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of watching.\u201d<\/em><br><em>&#8211;<\/em><\/p><cite><em>Ong Sor Fern,<\/em>The Straits Times<br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/wr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/STF-8plays-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/wr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/STF-8plays-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/wr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/STF-8plays-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/wr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/STF-8plays-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/wr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/STF-8plays.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight of Singapore\u2019s best playwrights &#8211; from the established to the new and undiscovered &#8211; explored issues as diverse and complex as press freedom, inequality, care for the aged, toxic masculinity, race and gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veteran playwrights (Tan Tarn How\u2019s <em>Press Gang<\/em> and Alfian Sa\u2019at\u2019s <em>An Actress Prepares<\/em>) shared the spotlight with new voices (Thomas Lim\u2019s <em>Supervision<\/em>, Ruth Tang\u2019s <em>Building A Character<\/em>, Neo Hai Bin\u2019s <em>When The Cold Wind Blows<\/em>, Chong Woon Yong\u2019s <em>G.F.E.<\/em>, Sanmu\u2019s <em>One Metre Square: Voices From Sungei Road<\/em> and Pam Oei\u2019s <em>Faghag<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helmed by some of our most experienced directors, with top-notch designers and actors, each of the new plays went through months of rigorous development and rehearsals before being staged. Directed by Hossan Leong, with a book by Jonathan Lim and music by Elaine Chan, the show was a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season. It reminded us all of the importance of love and kindness: a message that a company totalling 107, both on stage and behind the scenes, worked incredibly hard to share with audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201c<em>Crazy hilarious and overflowing with fun&#8230; always 100% local.
