{"id":34968,"date":"2014-07-01T16:16:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-01T08:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/?p=34968"},"modified":"2021-05-25T16:25:45","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T08:25:45","slug":"a-special-night-of-theatre-magic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/a-special-night-of-theatre-magic\/","title":{"rendered":"A Special Night Of Theatre Magic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Children with special needs don&#8217;t often get to enjoy a night out at the theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s usually not the kids who don&#8217;t want to go out,\u201d explains Gabriel Lee, whose 14-year-old brother-in-law, Jonathan, has Down Syndrome. \u201cIt&#8217;s usually the parents who are worried that their kids would cause inconvenience in a public area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s why Gabriel \u2013 who co-owns and runs gluten-free cafe Jonathan&#8217;s with his wife Agnetta \u2013 was more than happy to act as the middle-man between Singapore&#8217;s Down Syndrome Association and W!LD RICE for last year&#8217;s pantomime,&nbsp;<em>Jack And The Bean-Sprout!<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help and support of many generous individuals, 580 children, parents, staff and volunteers from 12 homes and charities watched&nbsp;<em>Jack &amp; The Bean-Sprout!<\/em>, for free. The Down Syndrome Association received sixty tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe set up a booth to distribute tickets and gave out goodie bags too,\u201d Gabriel remembers. \u201cWe sponsored cookies for all the kids!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBringing the kids to a pantomime actually gives them an outlet,\u201d he points out. \u201cThey might be a little scared or intimidated at first by what&#8217;s going on. It might take a few more pantomimes for them to get used to the idea and become more engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut it really gives these kids a chance to go out and have fun, to not just sit at home. They enjoyed themselves!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, W!LD RICE will again be working with several charities to give under-privileged children and young people the opportunity to experience the magic of live theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re very happy to see an increasing awareness for children with special needs, like Jonathan,\u201d says Gabriel. \u201cIt&#8217;s what drives us and gives us hope.
