Using some of the same characters and ideas from the original 2006 incarnation of&nbsp;<em>Jack<\/em>, we decided to whip up a brand-new musical\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s right \u2013 a&nbsp;<em>brand-new<\/em>&nbsp;musical! We love to live on the W!LD (and some might say crazy) side!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe scale of the show easily rivals that of&nbsp;<em>La Cage Aux Folles<\/em>, which occupied the Esplanade Theatre last year,\u201d explained Ivan Heng, who relinquished the role of the pantomime dame to serve as director for this new version of&nbsp;<em>Jack<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Featuring a main cast of 13 and two revolving FIRST STAGE kid casts (44 children in total),&nbsp;<em>Jack<\/em>&nbsp;employed 150 of Singapore\u2019s finest theatre practitioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/newsletter\/NL10\/01B.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The cast of\u00a0<em>Jack<\/em>\u00a0in rehearsal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe W!LD RICE pantomimes aren&#8217;t exactly traditional British pantomimes\u2026 I&#8217;d like to think they&#8217;re a form in and of themselves,\u201d mused playwright Joel Tan about his first experience scripting a W!LD RICE pantomime. \u201cI think the form offers a quite special, sometimes subversive, way to tell Singaporean stories in a non-confrontational way.\u201d\u00a0<strong>[Check out our full interview with Joel\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/www.wildrice.com.sg\/jack-of-all-trades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a><\/em>.]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joel worked closely with our musical maestro Elaine Chan, who can now proudly say she has composed the original music for nine out of ten of our pantomimes to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve been the regular in the pantomime crew,\u201d Elaine observed, \u201cBut the show always turns out differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy gut feel for what Joel and Ivan were going for was very much in the vein of showtunes and musical theatre\u2026 We egged each other on! She&#8217;s larger than life. She gets to be the bawdiest, loudest, crassest character in the entire show, and people will still have to like her. You can&#8217;t make people hate her, \u2019cause she&#8217;s not the villain. We ask them for help, and we get their opinions&#8230; It makes them feel like they&#8217;re part of the play as well. Choreographer Richard Chia, who returned to think up dance routines for his second pantomime, loves working with the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe culture and tradition of a kids&#8217; cast has already developed,\u201d commented Richard. \u201cWe look to the elder kids to guide the younger ones\u2026 The difference in this pantomime is that we&#8217;re trying to get the kids more involved in the show proper \u2013 not just have them come out and be cute. Now, we expect a lot more from them.
