<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe result exceeded our wildest dreams \u2013 over 15,000 audience members packed the theatres of LASALLE, making it the best-attended festival we\u2019ve staged to date. All three shows \u2013 which included brand-new docuplay\u00a0Cook A Pot Of Curry<\/em>\u00a0and revivals of two earlier works,\u00a0Dreamplay: Asian Boys Vol. 1<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Optic Trilogy<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 played to sold-out houses in their final week and several times throughout the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s a new-ish thing for me, doing verbatim or documentary theatre, where the material \u2013 the actual text of the play \u2013 comes from interviews I do with other people,\u201d explained Alfian when asked about how he framed the hot-button issues of migration and xenophobia in Curry<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn a sense, it does make you a little insecure as a playwright because you ask, \u2018Where is my voice in this piece?\u2019 But, after doing\u00a0Cooling-Off Day<\/em>, I realised that the playwright does have his own point of view, and that\u2019s reflected in the structuring of the voices and in the editing of the transcripts.\u201d\u00a0[Check out more of Alfian\u2019s thoughts on writing Curry\u00a0here<\/em><\/a>.]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Cast member Nelson Chia explained how he helped craft the final script, which comprises a series of vignettes and monologues. \u201cEach actor was asked to do three to four interviews, either with Singaporeans or foreigners or PRs. Then we transcribed the interviews and gave them to Alfian, who did twenty or thirty interviews himself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nelson didn\u2019t have to look very far at all for his characters or stories. \u201cThe fact is that it\u2019s not difficult to find people!\u201d he pointed out. \u201cMy brother-in-law is a Canadian. My cousin\u2019s boyfriend is from England. Another friend, who\u2019s a writer, is from China. They\u2019re all working here. They\u2019re basically friends and relatives.\u201d\u00a0[Read Nelson\u2019s full interview\u00a0here<\/em><\/a>.]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The festival also set the stage for the revival of Dreamplay<\/em>, one of the earliest queer plays in the Singapore canon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen I wrote it, I asked myself: ‘What\u2019s the antithesis of promoting homosexuality? Condemning it, right?’\u201d Alfian remembered. \u201cSo I had a figure who, for me, stood in for the state and some of those firebrand religious dogmatic kind of people \u2013 and I had this person coming down to Singapore as a messianic figure to save gay people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s ostensibly about a certain conservative agenda \u2013 rehabilitation, gay reparative therapy \u2013 but because this person is a goddess, you know that it\u2019s so camp\u2026 That, for me, was the subversion that might not be evident in the text that we sent to the censors.\u201d\u00a0[Read more of Alfian\u2019s thoughts on\u00a0Dreamplay<\/em>\u00a0here<\/em><\/a>.]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Veteran Malaysian actress Jo Kukathas believed that the play \u2013 though surreal and challenging to watch and perform \u2013 would connect with audiences. \u201cDreamplay<\/em>\u00a0is episodic, it’s absurd, it’s a bit mad, but underneath all that chaos, it’s about something deeply felt and emotionally true.\u201d\u00a0[Read Jo\u2019s full interview\u00a0here<\/em><\/a>.]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This revival of The Optic Trilogy<\/em> marked the first time it was staged in Singapore in over a decade. In the meantime, the play has travelled far and wide, entrancing audiences in Zurich, Stockholm and Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt basically looks at relationships between men and women, which I guess came out of my anxiety not to be pigeonholed as a queer writer,\u201d Alfian revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese are potentially romantic, erotic relationships, with a lot of buried secrets and memories and things to do with sight. That’s why it’s called \u2018optic\u2019: it covers ideas such as voyeurism and visibility; basically, it examines how two people look at each other, and what are the limits to looking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alfian was not the only person thrilled to revisit The Optic Trilogy<\/em>. Brendon was the male lead in the very first production over a decade ago. \u201cThis time round, I think it’s much more rich,\u201d he observed. \u201cWe’re really getting to the real sense of what The Optic Trilogy<\/em> is. I’m really glad to have a second chance to illuminate this text.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Janice hoped that people would leave the theatre with a little empathy for their fellow man (and woman). \u201cThese characters could be any six Singaporeans whom we might squeeze next to on the MRT, work alongside at the office, or even our next door neighbour. We are all not who we seem to be on the outside. Audiences packed the Lowercase Cafe for three free public performances of Alfian’s 2001 smash-hit docu-play Cooling-Off Day<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Members of the public also attended two lively ‘Art & Life Sessions’ organised to discuss the thought-provoking issues raised in Alfian’s plays.
