\u201cWe\u2019ve heard so much about Earnest<\/em> \u2013 when are you bringing it back again?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a question that\u2019s been asked of director Glen Goei and star Ivan Heng umpteen times since 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four years ago, W!LD RICE\u2019s all-male production of Oscar Wilde\u2019s bitingly satirical The Importance Of Being Earnest<\/em> was the hottest ticket in town. The show played to sold-out audiences almost every night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust the huge number of people who\u2019ve [asked us about it]\u2026\u201d Glen observed. \u201cWe thought we\u2019d do it again while it was still fresh in people\u2019s minds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, W!LD RICE decided to stage\u00a0Earnest<\/em>\u00a0again, with almost entirely the same cast as before. \u201cMy idea was to have an all-male cast, where none of the female characters are in drag,\u201d Glen explained. \u201cI felt that would somehow sensationalise the play or cheapen it.\u201d\u00a0[Read the full interview with Glen\u00a0here<\/em><\/a>!]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March this year, rehearsals began in\u2026 well, in earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had forgotten all my lines \u2013 I couldn\u2019t believe how little of it I remembered!\u201d lamented Chua Enlai, who reprised the role that won him the Life! Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he did enjoy revisiting the production, not least because it gave him the chance to try something different as Lady Gwendolyn Fairfax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to have the foundation there, and have the ability to decide whether to deviate from it or push it,\u201d mused Enlai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fashion designer Frederick Lee also returned to recreate his award-winning looks for Earnest<\/em>. \u201cI gained inspiration from looking at fashion plates and photographs of real people and existing pieces of clothing from the Victorian era,\u201d Frederick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRecreating this extravagance on stage was an exciting and challenging job. In May 2014, W!LD RICE will be taking Earnest<\/em> on tour. The production will receive its international premiere at the Macao Arts Festival, where it will play at the Dom Pedro V Theatre from 16-17 May 2014 at 8pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Glen and our lighting designer Mac Chan visited Macau to check out the theatre ahead of our premiere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure the message hidden beneath the merry surface of Wilde\u2019s play will translate to audiences in Macau as well,\u201d ‘said Ivan Heng, who will again reprise the role of the indomitable Lady Bracknell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt would be easy to dismiss it as shallow. But dig deeper and you\u2019ll find that Wilde was writing about the conservatism, superficiality and prejudice of the moralistic Victorian society\u2026 There\u2019s so much in Earnest<\/em> that we can still recognise in ourselves today.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
