Lucas Teo attended his very first W!LD RICE pantomime \u2013 2013\u2019s Jack & The Bean-Sprout!<\/em> \u2013 at the tender age of three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, watching the pantomime has become a family tradition. He\u2019s been in the audience for every production since then, including Monkey Goes West<\/em> and The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, it was Monkey Goes West<\/em> \u2013 a musical extravaganza that blended elements of the British pantomime with Chinese martial arts \u2013 that set Lucas on his path towards becoming an wushu superstar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting in the audience in 2014, he was captivated by the sight of kids performing wushu stunts live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI asked my mother, \u2018How do the children spin all the weapons?\u2019\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucas\u2019 interest in wushu \u2013 further fuelled by his love of Jackie Chan\u2019s stunts in The Karate Kid<\/em> \u2013 convinced his mom, Angela, to sign him up for lessons with Martial House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was just five years old when he started wushu lessons \u2013 beginning with the basics, like learning how to stretch properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he started to pick up longer and more complicated routines, his coach realised that Lucas had lots of potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe thought I was very good, so he gave me a better coach!\u201d Lucas explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before long, Lucas was attending lessons with children a few years older than he was. \u201cI was in K2,\u201d he remembers. \u201cAnd some of the other kids were in Primary Five!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a few months, Lucas participated in the 2016 National Wushu & Sanda Championships. He was the youngest contestant \u2013 and took home his very first bronze medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August this year, he took home two gold medals at the same event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, everything has come full circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Lucas is part of the contingent of kids from Martial House who are adding thrilling action beats and wushu<\/em> flourishes to Mama White Snake<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s excited to be part of a pantomime, although he admits that learning how to dance and perform his wushu <\/em>moves to a certain rhythm was challenging for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn wushu<\/em>, you don\u2019t have to count \u2013 you have to do the actual moves very fast,\u201d he says. \u201cIn the show, it\u2019s very hard to do it all in time with the music!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucas has also had to venture outside of his comfort zone in learning how to sing.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t like that part so much,\u201d he laughs, although he does love singing along backstage to his favourite song in the show \u2013 Normally Our Family<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the moment, he\u2019s happy to keep his work on stage to a minimum. \u201cMy mother wants me to focus on my studies and on my wushu <\/em>training!\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, he\u2019s had a blast working with the other kids in the cast (including his sister, Bernice!) and winning cheers and applause with his wushu <\/em>routine in the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
