{"id":2364,"date":"2020-06-09T11:21:06","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T11:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/yeolaw.com.sg\/?page_id=2364"},"modified":"2026-06-21T21:06:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T13:06:01","slug":"mandatory-parenting-programme","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/glutenfreepleasure.com\/__proxy_domain\/yeolaw.com.sg\/our-practice-areas\/divorce\/mandatory-parenting-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory Parenting Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"color: #7030a0;\"><strong>PRE-DIVORCE MANDATORY PARENTING PROGRAMME (MPP) FOR DIVORCING PARENTS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #7030a0;\">Aim<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In December 2016, the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) designed the Mandatory Parenting Programme (MPP) for intended divorcees with children under the age of 21 years old to attend a short consultation session before filing for divorce. You do not need to attend this MPP session if your divorce is uncontested and simplified divorce right from the start.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #7030a0;\">Section 94A of the Women\u2019s Charter<\/strong> states that MPP is aimed to inform parties whom are unable to agree on the\u00a0reason for divorce\u00a0and\/or\u00a0ancillary matters, to prioritise the well-being of children and the impact of divorce that may have on a child and the followings: &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the financial challenges of divorce\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>how divorce impacts living arrangements\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>child custody and access\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>the importance of co-parenting and having a parenting plan\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"color: #7030a0;\"><strong>MPP vs Marriage Counselling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The MPP is not the same as marriage counselling. Divorce is a personal choice which has been derived based on your personal observation of your own marriage. It is not anybody\u2019s duty to dissuade a person from forsaking the family, neither is it for anyone to \u201csave\u2019 the family.<\/p>\n<p>You should approach a trained family counsellor if you need someone to talk to.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #7030a0;\"><strong>Who conducts the MPP?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You may attend a one-time, 2-hour MPP session alone with or without your spouse.<\/p>\n<p>The sessions, which may be shorter than two (2) hours are conducted by counsellors from Divorce Support Specialist Agencies (DSSAs).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #7030a0;\"><strong>Is there any payment involved?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>MPP is completely free of charge.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #7030a0;\"><strong>Do I attend alone or with my spouse?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You may proceed to apply for MPP session on your own without seeking your spouse\u2019s consent. Divorce is a personal decision and you can decide not to inform your spouse or anyone.<\/p>\n<p>You may also decide to discuss the matter with your spouse and attend the session at different time. Currently, the sessions are grouped into male and female sessions with 6 to 12 attendees each time.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, if you believe that attending the MPP with your spouse will be beneficial for the divorce and your child, you may email\u00a0<u><a href=\"mailto:dssaprogrammes@msf.gov.sg\">dssaprogrammes@msf.gov.sg<\/a><\/u>\u00a0with your request.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #7030a0;\"><strong>I do not wish to attend MPP?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The only way to be excluded from attending MPP is when a party to the marriage suffers mental incapacity defined under the Mental Capacity Act and produces supporting medical evidence.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #7030a0;\"><strong>I am overseas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When applying for MPP, you may indicate that you are not in Singapore and will not be travelling back in the near future.
