Consequently, in this article, we will explore the topic of personal protection orders and guide you on how to apply for one.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a Personal Protection Order?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"dc4j-0-0\">The family court in Singapore issues the Personal Protection Order (PPO) to protect a spouse and\/or their children suffering from family violence<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dc4j-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"dc4j-2-0\">You can find this order under Part VII of the Women\u2019s Charter, supplemented by the Expedited Order and the Domestic Exclusion Order<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dc4j-3-0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For a successful PPO application, you must prove two elements:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A family member has committed or is likely to commit an act of family violence; and<\/li>\n<li>A PPO is necessary for the protection of that family member.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, how does one define \u201cfamily violence?\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/sso.agc.gov.sg\/Act\/WC1961#pr64-\">Section 64 of the Women\u2019s Charter<\/a>&nbsp;describes family violence as any of the following acts:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"d7pmg-0-0\">Wilfully<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"d7pmg-1-0\"> or <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"d7pmg-2-0\">knowingly<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"d7pmg-3-0\"> putting a family member in fear of hurt, or attempting to do so;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-offset-key=\"b9s2r-0-0\">Committing an act that <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"b9s2r-1-0\">is known<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"b9s2r-2-0\"> or ought to have <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"b9s2r-3-0\">been known<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"b9s2r-4-0\"> to cause hurt to a family member;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"69ef0-0-0\">Wrongfully<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"69ef0-1-0\"> confining or restraining a family member against their will; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"fp0ck-0-0\">Continually<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"fp0ck-1-0\"> harassing with intent to cause or knowing that it likely causes anguish to a family member<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"fp0ck-2-0\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"e3kia-0-0\">The court recognizes not only physical abuse but also psychological abuse, such as intimidation, threatening behaviour, harassment, mocking, controlling, confining, or restricting a person from free movement as family violence<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"e3kia-1-0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The Different Types of PPOs in Singapore<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There is a wide variety of types of protection orders the court can grant you. Under <a href=\"https:\/\/sso.agc.gov.sg\/Act\/WC1961#pr65-\">section 65(5) of the Women\u2019s Charter<\/a>, these protection orders include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li><b>A personal protection order (PPO)<\/b> &#8211; Restrains the abuser from committing family violence. Also helps restrain the abuser from inciting or assisting anyone to commit family violence against the family member.<\/li>\n<li><b>An expedited order (EO)<\/b> &#8211; An urgent and temporary PPO made without going through a trial. If it is satisfied that there is imminent danger of family violence, the court has power to grant an EO immediately upon application of a PPO, by virtue of <a href=\"https:\/\/sso.agc.gov.sg\/Act\/WC1961#pr66-\">section 66 of the Women\u2019s Charter<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>A domestic exclusion order (DEO)<\/b> &#8211; Domestic Exclusion Orders (DEOs) ban the abuser from the house in which the family has been living, as stated under <a href=\"https:\/\/sso.agc.gov.sg\/Act\/WC1961#pr65-\">section 65(5)(a) of the Women\u2019s Charter<\/a>. This can either be the whole house or only certain parts of the house.<\/li>\n<li><b>A counselling order (CGO) <\/b>&#8211;<span class=\"hardreadability\">This order refers parties in a PPO application to counselling and <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\">is made<\/span> <span class=\"adverb\">concurrently<\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"> with a PPO<\/span>. A family support agency conducts the counselling, and children may need to attend as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Who Can Obtain a PPO in Singapore?<\/b><\/h2>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"6rnb6\" data-offset-key=\"a0o91-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"a0o91-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"a0o91-0-0\"><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Any citizen, resident, and even those domiciled in Singapore can file for a personal protection order, including members of Muslim families.
