8 Wedding Catering Food Ideas to Delight Your Guests in SG

Every union is a wonderful opportunity to bring together the people you love in one big, joyous occasion. But no celebration is complete without a delectable feast.

Bonding over a meal is a very typically Singaporean practice, with cuisine from the different local cultures represented. Your wedding can therefore be a platform to showcase this diversity, and foster togetherness through the common language of food. Here are some of the wedding catering food ideas from Kryston to help you along your wedding planning journey.

1. Seafood Aglio Olio

Every buffet spread needs an impressive opening, and of the number of good choices to place at the beginning of the buffet line, pasta dishes stand out for their versatility and broad appeal.. A healthy and simple, and yet delectable pasta option for your table, is the Seafood Aglio Olio.

This understated dish is a perfect complement for other meat, vegetable or seafood dishes you choose to add to your spread, as it doesn’t have any overpowering flavours. This dish is also suitable for guests of any age, including children.

2. Baked Snapper Fillets with Mango Salsa

In Chinese culture, serving fish at your wedding is traditionally considered auspicious. This custom is rooted in the Chinese word for fish, which is pronounced similarly with the word ‘Surplus’. Fish therefore symbolises happy wishes for a couple’s prosperity and abundance throughout their married life.

We highly recommend Baked Snapper Fillets with mango salsa.. The tangy flavours of the salsa are bound to liven up any palette, and add a vibrant colour to this already delectable dish.

3. Nonya Ayam Buah Keluak

Peranakan cuisine is well known and well loved for its unique blend of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian culinary traditions. Much like Singapore, a Peranakan dish is a testament to the harmonious fusion of diverse influences.

And what better way to celebrate unity and togetherness, than with the infamous Peranakan dish, Nonya Ayam Buah Keluak also known as the “black gold of the east”. The Nonya Ayam Buah Keluak, is a chicken dish cooked in a tamarind and spice gravy with Buah Keluak seeds. Raw buah keluak (black nuts) once processed, give the dish a rich layer of umami flavour unlike any other seasoning.

Fun fact: Ayam Buah Keluak also happens to be the favourite dish of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew and his son, former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

4. Scallop on Shell With Chili Crab Sauce

Add a touch of charm to your wedding menu with exquisitely crafted seafood dishes. Scallops, in particular, offer an aesthetically pleasing addition. When paired with a tantalising and mildly spicy Chili Crab Sauce, it becomes a true reflection of local tastes that any Singaporean would be proud to have on their plate.

This signature sauce is the highlight of the dish, combining a garlic, onion and chilli paste with tangy tomatoes and silky eggs to give it a creamy and rich texture. It imbues the springy shellfish flesh in the scallop with a decadent aroma and flavour.

5. Fragrant Cereal Prawns

Crispy, aromatic and buttery. These three words describe Fragrant Cereal Prawns most aptly. Add this classic Singaporean favourite to your wedding buffet and watch as guests empty this dish within minutes.

Prawns are commonly served at weddings; their name in Cantonese, ‘Har’ is similar to the sound of laughter, signifying a wish for the everlasting happiness of the married couple. Cereal prawns are particularly memorable. They are cooked with fried cereals, which provides a crunchy texture in contrast to the prawn’s soft inner flesh. The addition of butter and curry leaves imbues the dish with an indulgent fragrance, enough to entice and captivate any diner.

6. Nasi Briyani with Achar

Here is yet another well-loved local creation, now served with a gourmet touch. Nasi Briyani was first introduced to Singapore by early Indian settlers, and now it has become a dish beloved by all, regardless of cultural background.

This aromatic rice dish is made by first simmering spices in ghee, before adding aromatic flavours  and finally, uncooked rice. The result is a soft, fluffy, appetising rice dish best paired with a meat curry or Rendang. Briyani is also—as you’ll find in our menu–often paired with condiments such Achar, a spicy pickle of vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers and Daikon radish.

7. Slow Cooked Mutton Rendang

Rendang is a regional dish originating from the Minangkabau tribe of Indonesia, whereby meat is slow cooked in a mixture of herbs and spices, including lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, ginger and chillies. Meats, typically beef or mutton, are stewed in this curry for several hours until most of the liquid has evaporated, resulting in tender, soft meat infused with the robust and intense flavour of its many ingredients.

This dry curry, often called the King of Curries, is often paired with warm, steaming plain rice or other flavoured rice dishes like Nasi Biryani. Sometimes, it is also served alongside Nasi Impit (compressed rice) or Roti Jala (a net-like savoury pancake).

8. Bo Bo Cha Cha

Cakes and pastries often make up wedding dessert tables. But if you would like to add a Singaporean touch to your dessert selection, do consider Bo Bo Cha Cha. This sweet porridge is made with coconut milk, sweetened with rock sugar or palm sugar and flavoured with Pandan leaves. Cubes of cooked taro and sweet potatoes are added in, together with sago pearls and beans. This comforting and familiar dessert is the perfect way to end a sumptuous meal, celebrating the union of two hearts and minds.
