Leisure places like Downtown East and Pasir Ris Park provide the ideal location for families to spend their weekends to relax and bond. Furthermore, Aloha Loyang, Fisherman’s Village, the Pasir Ris Sea Sports Club and the numerous pet farms within the vicinity provide a wide array of activities for both the young and old to further enhance one’s leisure experiences. District 18 is also not short of reputable schools, further bolstering its appeal to families. These include Tampines and Meridian Junior College and Temasek Polytechnic to name a few.
It could be rather appalling in light of district 18’s lively ambiance and urban developments that it used to encompass Tampines as a rubber plantation in the 1800s. Tampines which was first identified on the Franklin and Jackson map of 1828 derived its name after the Tampines tree that surrounded the area. Pasir Ris on the other hand had its humble beginnings as a village in the 1800s. The area was also well-known for its numerous plantation estates including the Singapore United Plantations, Loh Lam Estate, Hun Yeang and Thai Min Estates.
Today, district 18 is a top choice for families due to its wide array of family-centred recreational facilities and amenities. In particular, Pasir Ris has such recreation areas like the NTUC Downtown East with facilities such as chalets and theme parks like Wild Wild Wet; perfect for a weekend getaway. Tampines also provides several family-related shopping areas like the IKEA and Courts outlets. Moreover, several community parks also surround Tampines, making it a great place for families to have a relaxing stroll or workout together. These would include Tampines North Park, Tampines Leisure Park, Tampines Central Park and the Festival Park to name a few. This has incited several private residential projects including Executive Condominiums (EC) and landed properties to be implemented over the years. These include the Sea Horizon, a 495-unit, 99-year leasehold EC located in Pasir Ris expected to be completed in 2017.
