Some toddler dog friendly photoshoot sessions go exactly as planned. This one didn’t. Yet it turned out to be one of the most beautiful shoots we’ve done all year.
The Pet & Toddler Photoshoot, 30 Minutes Before Sunset
We’d originally scheduled this toddler dog friendly photoshoot for a late afternoon session at the Gallop Extension. Rain had other plans, and the shoot was pushed to “maybe next time.” But “next time” isn’t always simple. The family’s grandmother had flown in all the way from Hong Kong, and with her flight back just two days away, there might not be another chance to get this session done together as a family anytime soon.

So when the phone rang thirty minutes before sunset, the mum, a vet, asking if we could still make it happen that evening? There was really only one answer. I (Melody) grabbed my gears and raced to the gardens, chasing the last light of the day.
It’s the kind of moment that reminds us why we love this job. Sometimes the best photos aren’t the ones you carefully plan for weeks. They’re the ones that almost didn’t happen at all.

Why Golden Hour Is Worth the Gamble
We got to Gallop Extension just as the sky started turning that soft amber-to-blue gradient photographers chase all year round. The historic black-and-white houses on the grounds were already lit up, glowing warm against the darkening sky. The kind of backdrop you can’t recreate in photoshop, no matter how hard you try.
Shooting at dusk is a race against the clock. You get a narrow window. Maybe 20, 30 minutes just before the light disappears entirely. But that pressure often produces the most magical images: soft, golden light on skin, gentle rim-lighting from the sky behind, and a warmth to the whole scene that midday sun just can’t give you.

For families thinking about outdoor sessions, this is our biggest tip: don’t underestimate golden hour, even if it means a tighter schedule. The pictures speak for themselves.

Three Generations, Two Poodles, and a Toddler
This family session had layers most shoots don’t. Three generations together, plus two very good dogs!

- Grandmother, having just landed from Hong Kong, present for what might be a rare in-person family moment before heading home
- Mum and Dad, a vet and her husband, both clearly at ease letting their pets be part of the portraits rather than an afterthought
- Their two-year-old, who spent most of the session laughing and smiling.
- Two standard poodles, a father-daughter duo, who tore across the lawns with the kind of joy only dogs off a leash can have
We stopped trying to pose the toddler about ten minutes in. Some of the best shots of the evening came from simply following his cues, camera ready, letting him react naturally to the poodles bounding around him.
Photographing toddler dog friendly photoshoot outdoors
Standard poodles have a lot of personality (I would know, I have one myself too), and this father-daughter duo brought all of it. Instead of forcing formal sit-and-stay portraits, we let them run. Chasing their hoomans across the open lawns near the black-and-white houses, tails and curls flying. Those candid, mid-motion shots ended up being some of our favorites from the whole session, full of genuine movement and life rather than stiff posing.

A few things that helped us capture natural pet dog portraits:
- Shooting in continuous burst mode to catch the exact moment of a leap, a look back, or a toddler’s laugh
- Letting the family interact naturally rather than directing every pose. Most of the magic came from genuine reactions, not instructions
- Using the last light strategically, positioning the family and dogs so the glowing houses framed the background without competing for attention
Why This Session Meant More Than “Just Photos”
At the heart of it, this wasn’t just a rescheduled shoot. It was a small window of time with a grandmother who lives thousands of miles away, a toddler who’s growing up fast, and two dogs who won’t stay puppies forever. The rain delay could have meant this moment never got captured at all.

It’s a good reminder for any family debating whether to reschedule, wait for “perfect” conditions, or just squeeze the shoot in when they can: sometimes the imperfect, last-minute session is the one you’ll treasure most.
