El Mero Mero founder says Mexican food is not just about tacos and burritos

See how a former legal professional pursued his passion for food.

Formerly known as Señor Taco, a chain of Mexican Taquerías in Singapore, the brand relaunched as El Mero Mero, which offers contemporary Mexican cuisine from every region in Mexico.

El Mero Mero which means “the go-to guy” or “the boss of the boss” aims to delight diners with a vibrant selection of Mexican food and drinks.

Housed in Chijmes, this restaurant owned and run by a Mexican team provides a welcoming feel with the neutrally chic décor adding a touch of sophistication. El Mero Mero features wall-to-wall shelves of brightly coloured pickled chillies and other products from Mexico, a large open kitchen enticing the diners with the smells and sounds of Mexican cooking and a large al fresco bar and seating area with a view of the picturesque gothic chapel at Chijmes.

According to Alejandro Blanco, founder of El Mero Mero, opening the restaurant allowed them to prove that modern Mexican cuisine is about more than just burritos and tacos. To do so, they will continue to offer great service and high quality, authentic Mexican food in Singapore.

“Our Mexican team is passionate about celebrating and showcasing the diverse range and quality of contemporary Mexican food so we’re confident that once people try El Mero Mero, they will become loyal, regular customers,” said Alejandro.

El Mero Mero’s promise

As the go-to guy for contemporary Mexican food, El Mero Mero promises to serve dishes which are similar to those being served in the best restaurants throughout Mexico today. The ingredients used in the dishes are sourced directly from Mexico and all salsas and sauces are made fresh in-house.

A company built on passion

Prior to starting Plan B Ventures, Alejandro spent over 10 years in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions as Director and Regional Counsel for CEMEX in Asia. Alejandro started the business by cooking at home and then delivering fresh items to his customers every day. He had always wanted to start his own business when the timing was right.

While in Singapore, he and his wife Catalina were craving for Mexican food. Realizing that there is an opportunity for this business, they decided to leave the corporate world and give it a chance. Plan B Ventures started with no infrastructure whatsoever – relying solely on Alejandro’s passion for Mexican food and desire to let the people of Singapore know that Mexican food is more than simple hard-shell tacos.

Today, aside from the restaurant, Plan B Ventures runs a manufacturing facility in Singapore that supplies a range of Latin American food products to both consumers and businesses such as Starbucks and hotel groups.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
