SEHCs designed for social good, business flexibility: MSE

The Minister responded to parliamentary questions about SEHC’s model.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Goh Han Yan said the socially conscious enterprise hawker centres (SEHCs) model is designed to balance the interests of stallholders and customers whilst allowing operators business flexibility.

This was in response to parliamentary questions about the SEHC model and the government’s role in overseeing tenancy arrangements.

“The National Environment Agency maintains oversight of the operators managing these hawker centres, and they must comply with its requirements,” Yan said.

Yan further noted that these requirements strike a balance between ensuring that patrons’ needs are adequately served and safeguarding stallholders’ well-being.

To safeguard the interests of stallholders, NEA has, since 2018, put in place basic guidelines for tenancy agreement terms. For instance, stalls should not be required to be open for more than five days per week and no more than eight hours a day, and limits are set on amounts that operators can charge stallholders for contractual breaches.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
