Six in 10 S’poreans at higher risk for developing diabetes complications

90% identified food as the most impactful factor on glucose levels.

More than half of Singaporeans (64%) said they are managing diabetes, but 60% of these individuals have high blood glucose levels associated with a higher risk for developing diabetes complications, according to an Abbott survey.

The report, which polled 352 respondents, found that 51% do not monitor glucose at home due to inconvenience (46%) or perceived lack of necessity (43%). Moreover, 90% identified food as the most impactful factor on glucose levels, with 74% saying they cut back on sweets and beverages after diagnosis.

Fewer people (40%) associated glucose impact with other food choices such as the reduction of carbohydrates (46%), processed food (43%), and the addition of protein-rich foods (30%).

The report emphasised the importance of portion control on glucose level awareness, however, only 1% do so.

Respondents said that they need to exercise more yet 80% said they do less than the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. More senior citizens (29%) said they were doing the recommended exercise as compared to 17% of those under 60.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
