Chart from 2022 Expedia Vacation Deprivation Study

Chart of the day: Around 4 in 5 Singaporean adults burnt out due to pandemic stress

The majority did not use vacation leaves for rest.

About 82% of working adults in Singapore said they were burnt out in 2021 caused of the pandemic stress situation, according to the online travel portal, Expedia's 2022 Vacation Deprivation Study.

In terms of employees feeling burnt out, Singapore scored the highest amongst 16 countries in North and South America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. The Lion City was followed by Mexico with 80% and Hong Kong with 79%.

Expedia’s study also revealed that burnout sentiments could be aggravated by fewer vacation days from 15 days in 2020 to 12 days in 2021.

Majority of Singaporean workers also did not use vacation days to rest, with 66% spending it on side hustles, 57% bringing their work laptops during vacation and 51% joining video conference calls frequently whilst on vacation.

The study also found that 78% of working Singaporeans struggled to unplug from their jobs during flexible work and work-from-home schemes whilst on vacation.

The 2022 study polled 14,544 respondents from 16 countries.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

Reaching the people who run Asia's businesses is harder than it used to be.

Inboxes are crowded. Attention is short. The executives you most want to reach — the founders, CFOs, and operators who actually move budgets — are the hardest to find through the usual channels. If you're building a company, a category, or a reputation, you already know this.

We've spent twenty years building the room they read. Singapore Business Review is where senior decision makers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia come for business coverage they can't get elsewhere — in print, online, and in person at the summits and roundtables we host across seven markets.

If you have something these readers should know about — a point of view worth publishing, a product worth their attention, an event worth their time — we'd like to hear what you're trying to do.
