As a parent, I am usually the designated holiday planner. I’m the one comparing flights, booking hotels, researching restaurants, coordinating transport, and making sure everyone gets from Point A to Point B on time. While family travel is always rewarding, it can also be exhausting.
That is why my recent trip aboard Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas with my teenage son felt like such a refreshing change.
From the moment we checked in until the day we disembarked, everything was seamless. The crew members were consistently warm, friendly, and helpful, patiently answering our questions and making us feel welcomed from the very beginning. It set the tone for what would become one of our most enjoyable family holidays.
What struck me most was how effortlessly the cruise combined multiple destinations into one vacation. Our itinerary took us from Shanghai to Japan, allowing us to experience different cities and cultures without the usual hassle of airports, train stations, hotel check-ins, and endless packing and unpacking.
Instead of dragging suitcases across multiple cities, we unpacked once and settled into our stateroom. Every morning, we woke up to a completely different view outside our window. One day it was the open ocean, another day it was a bustling port waiting to be explored. There was something magical about ending each evening with a sunset over the water and waking up to a new destination without having to lift a finger.
For families, that convenience alone is worth its weight in gold.
Of course, the ship itself is a destination.
My teenage son immediately gravitated towards the sports facilities, spending time at SeaPlex playing soccer and making new friends. It was wonderful watching him enjoy his independence in a safe environment while still being close by.
One of the most thrilling experiences for both of us was the North Star observation capsule. Suspended high above the ship, it slowly rises over 300 feet above sea level, giving passengers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding coastline. As someone who isn’t particularly fond of heights, I wasn’t sure how I would feel. Yet standing inside that glass capsule and seeing the world stretch endlessly around us was both exhilarating and unforgettable.
Another highlight was RipCord by iFly, the onboard skydiving simulator. Watching guests experience the sensation of freefall without jumping from an airplane was fascinating, and it perfectly captures the adventurous spirit that Spectrum of the Seas is known for.

There truly seemed to be something exciting around every corner. Whether it was the pools, the sundeck, live entertainment, family activities, or simply finding a quiet spot to watch the ocean, nobody ever had to wonder what to do next.
The dining experience exceeded our expectations as well. For meals prepared onboard a ship carrying thousands of passengers, the quality was exceptional. We enjoyed a variety of restaurants throughout the voyage, but one standout experience was dining at Teppanyaki. The chef wasn’t just preparing dinner—he was putting on a full performance. The laughter, interaction, and incredible food made it one of the most memorable meals I’ve had in years.
When evening arrived, the ship came alive in a different way. We spent time enjoying live music and catching spectacular performances together. Some of the shows featured gravity-defying stunts and acrobatics that left the audience completely captivated. It was the kind of entertainment that appeals to both teenagers and adults, which isn’t always easy to find.
Yet when I look back on the trip, the biggest takeaway wasn’t a particular attraction or destination.
It was quality time.
Without the stress of rushing to catch trains, coordinating tour buses, checking into new hotels, or figuring out where to eat next, my son and I simply had more time to enjoy each other’s company. We could spend the day together or pursue our own interests before reconnecting over dinner and sharing stories about our day.
For parents of teenagers, that balance is priceless.

Spectrum of the Seas gave us the rare opportunity to be together without feeling pressured to do everything together. It offered freedom, flexibility, adventure, and relaxation all at once.
If you’ve been considering a family holiday and are tired of the usual travel logistics, I genuinely recommend giving a cruise a try. The ability to visit multiple cities, enjoy world-class entertainment, dine well, and create meaningful family memories—all while unpacking only once—is a game changer.
My son came home with new friends, new experiences, and wonderful memories. I came home rested, refreshed, and wondering why we hadn’t tried this sooner!
